Nine-year-old Girl washed away in flash floods in Padubidri

Udupi: A nine-year-old schoolgirl was washed away while her elder sister was rescued by locals in a flash flood. The incident occurred when they were crossing a mini bridge at Padebettu near Padubidri on May 29.

The missing girl has been identified as Nidhi (9), daughter of Umesh and Asha Acharya who are residents of Patla. Nidhi studies in the fourth standard at Ganapathi School, Padubidri. Her elder sister Nisha was rescued by the locals.

According to the police, the rainwater was overflowing throughout the day over the bridge. The two sisters were returning from school in their bicycle. When they were crossing the mini bridge near Patla, they were washed away in the flood water.

Locals who noticed the incident rescued Nisha immediately. But Nidhi was washed away in the rainwater and is feared to be dead. The search operation for Nidhi Acharya was underway till late night. The search operations were hindered by darkness and rains.

A case has been registered in the Padubidri Police Station.
