No Corona Virus Threat in Udupi District – DC Jagadeesha

Udupi: There is no threat of the coronavirus in Udupi district. But precautionary measures have been taken to avoid spreading of the virus in the district said Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha.

In a press release on Sunday, February 9 DC Jagadeesha has said that four suspected coronavirus patients who were admitted at the District Hospital in Udupi has screened all of them and they have tested negative. There is no need for the public to panic about the corona virus in Udupi district, he said.

Three of the patients, a father, mother and a child, from Mandarthi had travelled to China and had returned a fortnight ago. The child’s mother has not shown any symptoms. Another patient is from Mudrangady, near Kaup.  The samples were sent to Bengaluru and the district administration received the report on Sunday.

An isolated ward of 10 beds has been set up at the District Hospital. Masks and other safety equipment have been provided to the doctors and staff at the hospital.

Before the age of the air travel it used to take months for contagious diseases to cross continents but now it only take 8 hours for the virus to spread from Asia to Europe. Under this context, it’s an irresponsible statement by the Udupi DC. How can he be certain there won’t be someone who recently arrived from Dubai with the virus? Dubai being the prominent international travel hub already has identified a few infected patients with corona virus. Only one sneeze is enough for the virus to spread. And it has 14 days incubation period.
