No Water in the City for the Fourth Day
Mangaluru : The city will be deprived of drinking water supply from the Thumbe vented dam for the fourth day on Thursday as Mangaluru City Corporation is yet to complete repairs to its main supply line that has been damaged at Adyar. K.S. Linge Gowda, Executive Engineer (water supply) in the corporation, speaking to media said that water supply will resume on Thursday night. “We have completed between 60 % and 70 % of the repair work,” he said.
The corporation stopped pumping water through both its 18 MGD capacity pipelines on Monday following water leak in one of the pipelines on Sunday night.
A water supply official said that it took about a day to excavate land in the damaged area. Draining water from the pipeline also took time. Welding works are being affected due to rain. Rainwater that got accumulated in the pit dug up for repair works is being pumped out using two pumpsets.
The main pipeline, which supplies drinking water to Mangaluru from Thumbe vented dam, being repaired at Adyar in Mangaluru on Wednesday.
As the city corporation has not issued any statement on the damage to the main pipeline at Adyar, many residents are clueless why they have not been getting water. Without knowing about the cut in water supply, many emptied water stored in their underground sumps. Hence, many have started collecting rainwater.
Meanwhile, Harish, a resident of Venkataramana Acharya Layout, near Mangaladevi temple at Bolara, said that about 15 houses in the layout have been deprived of water for eight days now. People are hiring tankers for water amid rainfall, he said and added that it is suspected that water supply could have been stopped due to blockage in the line somewhere nearby. He said that people have brought this to the notice of the Commissioner of the corporation by submitting a memorandum. But water supply has not been restored
