NRI Loses Rs 2.35 Lakh in E-mail Hacking in Udupi

Udupi: Miscreants have hacked the e-mail account of an NRI from Korangrapady here and fraudulently transferred a sum of Rs 2.35 lakh to a stranger’s account in Delhi.

The Korangrapady branch of Vijaya Bank had received an e-mail message from Melvyn D’Costa, who lives abroad, requesting for transfer of that amount to his wife’s account with South Indian Bank towards her medical expenses.

Soon thereafter, the e-mail account appeared to have been hacked and a fresh instruction to transfer the amount to account no. 629205502043 held by Pavan Singh with ICICI Bank at Chandni Chowk, Delhi.

The bank staff apparently took action on the latter message and transferred the amount. The fraud came to light when inquiries were made after it was observed that the amount had not been received by the South Indian Bank.

A complaint in the matter has been filed by the bank manager at the town police station.
