NSUI Udupi holds Signature campaign Demanding students Rights Commission
Udupi: As a state call by the NSUI, the Udupi district Unit organized a signature campaign on Thursday, February 15, demanding for the students’ rights Act and students rights commission.
The press release issued by Christan D’Almeida president of NSUI Udupi district unit has stated that students, especially the first-generation learners, have absolutely no support system in case there is a conflict between the university/college administration and the student. Exam management systems are neither transparent nor timely. Exam results are delayed and lack credibility. An overhaul of the exam management system should be done to bring transparency and ensure results on time.
Education is increasingly getting privatized and access for the poor students is denied on account of the high cost of education. There is apparent discrimination between rules and regulations governing private and public education institutions in the same stream. Parity should be brought in the rules and regulations in public and private professional colleges.
The NSUI is demanding the Karnataka Government to pass an Act guaranteeing fundamental rights for all students in all universities whether public or private. The legislation can be drafted in consultation with students and the faculty in an open process to define the minimum non-negotiable rights of the students. Rights can include freedom of speech, timely exam results, transparent admission process etc.
There should be a state Students Rights Commission to adjudicate on violations of fundamental provisions of the Students Rights Act. The Commission should ensure implementation of the Students’ Rights Charter and should be empowered to take suo moto cognizance of violations. The commission can have offices at the state, district and block level.
Many students signed and supported the movement. NSUI Udupi leaders Marsh Sequeira, Prajwal Kunder, Lyod and many others were present.
