Nun Ann Maria behind the wheels of an ambulance
Kattappana (Mathrubhumi): Ambulance driving is a male dominated job everywhere. However, this nun at Kattappana in Idukki district proves it wrong. Sr Ann Maria, the brave nun at the Akashapparava Assissi Ashram, Kattappana has come forward in the world dominated by men.
Sr Ann Maria who served as a nurse in Andhra, Ooty and Ujjain came to Akashapparava 16 years back. She now serves the inmates there.
She took driving license 13 years back. At that time, it had never come to her mind that she would one day drive the ambulance.
Ann Maria first held the wheels of the ambulance during an emergency situation in the ashram. She further took her accidental job seriously. The nun-cum-ambulance driver has the support of Fr Francis Dominic, director of the ashram and Sr Anita, provincial of the congregation.
The 67-year-old driver can reach Kottayam medical college from Kattappana in two and a half hours by ambulance.
So far with the grace of God her ride has been going smoothly. She continues her mission considering every trip as her duty to save one life.
