‘Nurses are the Best Trusted People’- Prof. Kathyayini at FMCoN Conference
‘Nurses are the Most Best Trusted People’- Prof. B V Kathyayini -Principal, NIMHANS, Bengaluru at Father Muller College of Nursing National Conference on ‘Envisioning -Creating The Future’ on 3 June 2017
“No man, not even a doctor, ever gives any other definition of what a nurse should be than this – ‘devoted and obedient’. I attribute my success to this – I never gave or took any excuse. I think one’s feelings waste themselves in words; they ought all to be distilled into actions which bring results. The very first requirement in a hospital is that it should do the sick no harm. To understand God’s thoughts one must study statistics… the measure of his purpose. There is no part of my life, upon which I can look back without pain.”-Florence Nightingale
Mangaluru: “We come to comfort and to heal, to love and serve in woe and weal; Come, Doctor, live your noble Hippocrate’s bequest, Come, Nurse, by Nightingale inspired, forget your broken rest, Come all who soothe in ways unsung Humanity’s unrest, Let’s all as one, with love pursue the toil by millions blest. We come to comfort and to heal, to love and serve in woe and weal”- these are part of the lyrics from the Fr Muller’s Institution Anthem- and these words also fit right for all the nursing students, who participated in the one- day National Conference conference on the topic ” Envisioning- Creating the Future’ which was held on 3 June 2017 at the Decennial Memorial Hall, Fr Muller Charitable Institutions. The conference was organized by Father Muller College of Nursing (FMCoN-accredited by NAAC ‘A’ grade)-Department of Nursing Administration and Management in collaboration with IInd M Sc Nursing.
The programme began with invoking God’s blessings through a prayer song rendered by three 4th Year BSc Nursing students of FMCON, followed by a welcome address delivered by Ms Shiji PJ-conference organizing chairperson. The conference was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by chief guest- Dr BV Kathyayini- Professor and Principal of NIMHANS, Bengaluru, along with other dignitaries on the dais namely- Fr Richard Coelho- Director, Fr Muller Charitable Institutions; Sr Jacintha D’souza- Principal, FMCON; Ms Shiji PJ; and Ms Frenita Reena D’souza- organizing Secretary.
In her inaugural address, Dr Kathyayini admiring the good work and dedication shown by the Founder of Nursing Florence Nightingale said, ” You are all the true ambassadors of your respective nursing institutions to alleviate suffering, inspire and innovate their service through integrity, compassion and loyalty. You have all stepped into this fertile and promising field of nursing, as full-fledged professionals to take care of the sick and needy. You have willingly embraced this dedicated profession which has its branches rooted in service to humanity from time immemorial. But when you perform your duties/service you need to have Integrity, Loyalty, and Compassion’.
” You need to follow in the footsteps of Florence Nightingale, because this profession of caring is passed from generation to generation, and you’ll have to make sure that you are vibrant, vigilant and more knowledgeable. But one sad part is that nurses dedication and service to humanity is never recognized, only doctors get the credit for all the service that nurses do. But never give up, because yours is a very professional and caring job in the world, and be proud of it. Remember that Nurses are the most best trusted people. Nurses also need to learn the modern scientific techniques and be knowledgeable in their work while providing care to the patients. You are also the future leaders in the healthcare industry, and you should utilize your talents and experience when you go out into the world serving the sick and suffering.” added Dr Kathyayini, following which she unveiled the conference theme.
Fr Richard Coelho addressing the gathering said, ” Nurses should be very committed, dedicated and thorough in their duties. One mistake that you make in health care sector, it will be highlighted and will be an eye-opener for everybody. Just yesterday a patient was dragged on the floor by his wife at a hospital in Shimoga when the hospital staff denied a wheelchair- and this incident went viral, in media- and became an eye-opener for the people in the healthcare industry. Similarly recently a person carried a dead person from the hospital to his home, since the hospital didn’t provide him an ambulance- even this incident became an eye-opener. So we need to see that such kind of silly mistakes never happen, which will bring a bad name to the institute”
“You have entered into this dynamic profession, ready to face the challenges of today. There many are many hurdles on your way, but you can overcome them. If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not experimenting. You’re not trying new approaches. Therefore never give up try, try and try. So dream to be better ME. Also be grateful to your parents for supporting and encouraging you in this nursing career. And always remember, you need to have compassion and professional touch, always with a human touch while serving the patients. There is a lack of communication these days in the hospitals, which problem that needs to be rectified for a better and smooth running of a health care centre. During the celebration of the World Day of the Sick on February 11, Pope Francis said that we should provide “new incentive to work for the growth of a culture of respect for life, health and the environment” and “inspire renewed efforts to defend the integrity and dignity of persons, not least through a correct approach to bioethical issues, the protection of the vulnerable and the protection of the environment. So make sure you perform your nurses duty with care, compassion and love towards the sick”.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms Frenita Reena D’souza- organizing Secretary, and the programme was compered by Sr Nancy Priya and Hima Joy- students of IInd Msc nursing at FMCON. The aims of this conference were to create a platform for professionals to exchange ideas about various strategies through which the future of nursing can be enriched and to discuss measures to monitor customer satisfaction- thus the theme of the conference “Envisioning-Creating The Future”.
