Udupi: “Officials should effectively function to tackle the water crisis in the district”, said Minister-in-charge District Pramod Madhwaraj in a meeting on the supply of water held at the CMC here on May 5.
The water level in the Baje dam has been decreasing, the present level in the dam is 1.5 meters. The state government has reserved funds for supplying drinking water since the district is facing a severe water crisis. The wards in the district have been divided into A, B, C zones for to supply water through tanker.
To monitor the supply of water to particular wards, nodal officers has been appointed. The nodal officers should supervise the supply of water and regularly update the concerned authorities. There is no shortage of tankers in the district, officials should take effective steps in utilising the tankers.
All measures have been taken to solve the water crisis in the district. The CMC has 17500 connections for drinking water and 7-gram panchayats where drinking water is being supplied. There is a demand for 23 thousand litres of water, at present, the CMC is not in a position to meet the drinking water needs of the people hence, it is depends on private tankers for supplying drinking water.
An 110-meter water storage plant has been planned, the government has released Rs 102 crores under KUSEMP. There are also plans for the construction of a dam at Shimbra under the Swarna 3rd stage. There are also plans for supplying water to Udupi through the Varahi. The Multi-Village drinking water scheme has also been made available to Thenkanidiyoor and Chantaru gram panchayats.
The inflow to Baje has completely stopped. The water is lifted to the dam by dredging areas near Shiroor, Bandaribettu, Puttige and other places. Water can be supplied till June 5. 17 tankers are available to supply water to 150-200 houses.
