Olympic champion Puig reaches Monterrey Open quarters
Monterrey (Mexico), April 6 (IANS) Puerto Rican Olympic champion Monica Puig defeated Switzerland’s Stefanie Voegele 6-4 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the Monterrey Open on the WTA Tour.
Puig on Thursday beat Voegele in a match marked by unforced errors, reports Efe.
The gold medallist of the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil played conservatively throughout the one hour and 47 minutes against Voegele, a finalist in the Mexican Open 2018.
“This is my first time playing at night here, and the conditions were a little different than they were the other day,” Puig said.
“The other day was really hot and the way the ball bounced and the court played was kind of different. But I’m very happy with the way I played.”
Number 68 in the WTA rankings, the Puerto Rican tennis player will in the next round face the Hungarian Timea Babos, who fought her way through to the quarterfinals by beating the British player Naomi Broady 6-3 and 6-4.
