Opposition Should not Play Politics With Water – Mayor Kavitha
Mangaluru: “The opposition should not play politics with water. We have taken precautions to avoid the water crisis. The opposition should understand the situation before they stage a protest against the rationing system of water. Mangaluru city has a population of 6 lakh but today there were only 100 protesters, to protest against the water problems. Why is it that only 100 persons from the opposition face water crisis”? questioned Mayor Kavitha Sanil in a press meet held at her chamber here on April 12.
Addressing the mediapersons Kavitha said, “When I was visiting the Thumbay dam I asked the former Mayor Ganesh Hosabettu to accompany us, but he refused. When we discussed the water problems, all the 60 corporators were present. The people of Dakshina Kannada are intellectuals, the opposition should not misguide them. They can understand their motive behind the protest.”
Kavitha further said, “Last year we have spent Rs 1.43 crore for the borewells and wells which is the tax payers money. This year we have not spent any money, we are trying to manage whatever water is available till April end. At any cost, the rationing of water will continue until the end of April. From May 1st I am ready to take the risk and provide uninterrupted supply of water if we manage to retain 5 meters of water until the end of April. Every day we monitor the level of water in the dam. When we are doing good work, the opposition doesn’t want to appreciate it. They are forcing us to supply water every day do that once the water level goes down they will blame me and say that the Mayor has failed to manage the water crisis. Being a Mayor I have the responsibility to provide water to my people. I will not take any risk until the end of April. From May 1st onwards we will supply water every day”.
Kavitha also said, “We are giving 10 days time for all the shop/building owners to open the parking spaces which they have blocked in front of their shops/buildings by placing no parking signs, chain fencing with chains etc. if not, action will be taken against them.”
Former Mayor Sashidhar Hegde, Deputy Mayor Rajaneesh and Corporator Sabitha Misquith were also present.
