Parivarthan Members Celebrate Supreme Court’s Historic Judgement on Section 377

Mangaluru: The members of the Parivarthan Charitable trust celebrated the Supreme Court’s Historic Judgement on Section 377, at Yeyyadi here on September 7.

Speaking to mangalorean.com Vice president of Parivarthan Charitable trust Ramya Gowda said, “Since many years we have been fighting for our rights. Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code is a section which was introduced in 1861 during the British rule of India. This section is used to criminalise sexual activities “against the order of nature”. On September 6, The Supreme Court of India ruled that the Section 377 was unconstitutional “In so far as it criminalizes consensual sexual conduct between adults of the same sex”. It is a great day in our lives because earlier violating section 377 was punishable by imprisonment or jail for 10 years”.

Secretary of PCT Sanjana said, “Today I am very happy because the Supreme court has given a historic judgement on Section 377. Our community has been fighting for our rights but there was opposition to pass the bill. We too can now have our family. The verdict has freed us from the yoke of Colonial law. Now we can walk openly as equal citizens of this country with liberty and dignity. I would also like to thank all those who have fought for our rights”.

Founder and Managing Trustee of Parivarthan said, “Today our members are overwhelmed with joy as their long pending struggle has ended and the Supreme court has given a historic judgement. Hereafter the LGBT community can lead a dignified life in the society. I urge all the people to treat transgenders with respect and let them lead a respectful life. I congratulate all the LGBT community and wish them all the best.”

The members distributed sweets and soft drinks and celebrated the victory.
