Participants Throw Old Mobiles and Win Brand New Smartphone in Kundapur
Udupi: Throwing mobile phone is actually a national sport in Finland. Competitors meet annually to see who can throw their handset the farthest. The same way, the Government College ground of Goliyangadi near Kundapur on Sunday, October 7 witnessed a unique competition. Hundreds of people gathered to throw their old mobile phones to get a new smartphone as a prize.
The competition was organized by Rupesh Kumar owner of Pragati Enterprises, Goliyangadi. He had announced that those who would throw their old unused mobile phones the farthest would win a new smartphone.
The competition got massive publicity on the Social media as well other media. Over 250 participants from across the Udupi district participated in the competition. Normally some of the competitions are being held without an entry fee but in this competition had an entry fee of Rs 20. About 250 unused Mobiles that were thrown by the participants in the competition were collected by the organizers.
Shekhar Settolli won the first place by throwing his old mobile to a distance of 77.90 meters while Rajesh Settolli won the second place by throwing his mobile as far as 77.20 meters. The first and second place winners were honoured with a Smart Phone and an Android phone respectively.
Physical teachers Ratnakar Naik, Chandrashekar Karkala, Satish Kumar, Azad Ahmed helped as Judges for the competition.
Speaking to Mangalorean.com organizer Rupesh Kumar said, “We organized this competition just for fun. The mobile phone throwing competition has been organized in Udupi district for the second time. 5 years ago such a competition was held in Brahmavar. Due to the media support and Social media campaign, we have received a very good response for this competition. This time we planned the competition in a small way but next year this competition will be held in a big way”, he added.
Rupesh further said, “The competition is a solution to e-waste menace. The competition is all about throwing mobile sets as far as possible. The person who thrown his mobile phone the farthest won a brand new smart phone. The phones once thrown will not be returned and we want to recycle and use them. We have already contacted an E-Waste company and they agreed to buy all old mobile phones,” he said.
