Patient Dies in Yenepoya Hospital, Family Assaults and Kidnaps Doctor
Update: As per reliable sources from Yenepoya Hospital- Deralakatte- it is noted that Mr Bavunni, aged 65 years suffering from Cellulitis was admitted to Yenepoya Hospital-Deralakatte at 4:00 pm on 15 May 2017. The same night at around 10:30 pm, the patient died of severe complications, although he was on ventilator support for over three hours. Coming to know about the death of this patient, a Madani group stormed the ICU of the hospital, and dragged out Dr Abhishek Shetty, an assistant professor at the hospital, alleging him of negligence.
The group dragged Dr Shetty out of the hospital into a van and drove off from the premises. Dr Shetty’s colleagues also got into action and followed the van, and were able to stop the van near Ullal. With the arrival of police to the spot, they were able to arrest three of the kidnappers and rescue the doctor- who was later admitted to KS Hegde hospital by the police- where the patient has also been taken for post-mortem. In the meantime, the driver of the van managed to escape, it is learnt.
Hospital sources also revealed that not only Dr Shetty was assaulted, even Florence, a senior nurse was also attacked by the mob, who is undergoing treatment for injuries. In response to the attack on the doctor, many hospital doctors extended their support by assembling at the Ullal Police station and also filed a complaint against the abductors. It is also learnt that the kidnappers have stolen Dr Abhishek Shetty’s watch and gold chain. The police are further investigating the case.
Mangaluru: A doctor being assaulted by the relatives of a patient has been reported at the Yenepoya Hospital here in the early hours of May 16.
According to the police, a patient from Kinya was admitted to the Yenepoya Hospital in Derlakatte. On May 15 the patient passed away. It is alleged that the family members barged into the 4th floor of the hospital and assaulted the doctor and a Nurse on duty. Later the doctor was kidnapped and taken in a vehicle and was handed over to the police.
In the assault, a nurse was also injured. The doctor and nurse both have now been admitted to the same Hospital.
Cases have been now filed by both parties in the Ullal police station.
