Patient Safety Day observed at Father Muller Medical College Hospital
- “I can and I will, We can and we will – Patient Safety is our Priority”
Mangaluru: Father Muller Medical College Hospital, Mangaluru observed the Global Patient Safety Day on 17 September 2019.
The day’s activities began with the unveiling of the banner on patient safety by Fr Richard Coelho, Director FMCI along with the management committee members. Jerlyn, Asst Quality Manager welcomed those gathered giving a brief summary on the importance of the day. The Director in his presidential address gave an insight into the International Patient Safety Goals, stressed on the importance of patient safety and motivated the staff in promoting patient safety culture of the hospital. In his concluding statement, the Director mentioned the responsibility of patient safety lies in the hands of all the staff/employees of the institution where all need to work hand in hand in order to promote patient safety in our Hospital. Fr Rudolph Ravi D’Sa, Administrator, FMMCH gave an insight into the various activities that were planned throughout the day and encouraged the staff to participate. Priyanka D’Souza, Quality Manager delivered the Vote of Thanks. Fr Nelson Pais, Asst. Administrator, FMMCH, Dr B. Sanjeeva Rai, Chief of Research, Dr Uday Kumar, Medical Superintendent, Sr. Janet, Chief Nursing Officer, Dr Venkatesha B M, NABH Co-ordinator were also present.
Dr Sanjeeva Rai, CMS, conducted a lecture for the Undergraduates, wherein 190 MBBS students participated in giving positive feedback on the event as it was something new apart from their curriculum.
The ward Supervisors during their daily rounds gathered the nurses in their respective wards and gave an insight on Patient Identification, Effective Communication, Safe use of Medication and Fall Prevention in our Hospital.
The HIC nurses also participated in the celebration by conducting Hand Hygiene Awareness campaign. The Post Graduates, Doctors and Nurses were reinforced through health education to perform hand washing before and after touching patients.
A short talk on patient safety in Laboratory was organized for the Laboratory staff by Dr. Sumanth D, Laboratory Safety Officer. More than 75 staff had attended the session. Patient Safety in Radiology was organized for the Radiology and Radiotherapy staff by Shridar and Riana for students, clerical staff and technicians.
Monitoring of the patient following Anaesthesia for the Post Operative ward nurses was conducted by Dr Balakrishna from Department of Anaesthesia. 25 Nurses from the Post Operative ward participated in the session.
International Patient Safety Goal 4 focuses on ensuring safe surgery practice hence a session on Use of Safe Surgery Checklist was organized for Post Graduates of Surgical specialties by Dr Prathvi Shetty, Department of Surgery.
Awareness on the Use of Fire Fighting Equipment was also created by the Fire and Safety Team headed by Rudolf D’Souza during his rounds in various areas.
Dispensing of Medication also plays a key role in safety. Hence, a session on Safe Dispensing of Medication was organized by Sr Silvia, In-charge, Pharmacy for the Pharmacy staff.
Spot mind activities like Patient Safety word search, identification of wrong practices, prescription errors, use of error-prone abbreviation, arranging in a sequence etc. where organized for Doctors, nurses, students and other staff in front of Aska Kiran Block Entrance by Dr Vidya Rao S and Printa Pinto. The staff showed a lot of enthusiasm and participated in these activities. Spot prizes were awarded to the winners. The days’ success was in the interactive participation of the Father Muller Family bringing in awareness through participation.
