Patriotism and Harmony Marks 72nd Independence day at Nehru Maidan 

Mangaluru: The 72nd Independence day was celebrated with the spirit of patriotism and harmony at the Nehru Maidan here on August 15.

The district minister in-charge U T Khader hoisted the Indian Tricolour Flag at 9:00 am and received the guard of honour.

The Karnataka Reserve police, civil police, home guards, Traffic police, NCC, Scouts and Guides demonstrated a colourful march-past on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering Minister Khader said, “August 15, is the day which we all cannot forget. We all should remember the brave hearts who have sacrificed their lives to make this country free from the British. This is a holy day for every Indian and we all should respect it. Our country did not gain freedom from the British within a day but hundreds of people sacrificed their lives fighting for freedom from the British. Today we all should remember Mahatma Gandhiji, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bhagat Singh, Subhash Chandra Bose, Dr Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru and many other great leaders who have sacrificed their lives for the country”.

U T Khader further said, “India is the largest democratic country which has unity in diversity. India has shown to the world that freedom can be achieved through non-violence. Today we need to remember the soldiers who dedicate their lives to safeguard our country. We need to come out of casteism, creed and religion to build a healthy society.”

Briefing on the development by the state government Minister Khader said, “The state government has implemented many schemes for the welfare of the people and is relentlessly working for the development of the state. The state government has also announced Moodbidri and Kadaba Taluk as Independent Taluks. From our district, we have received 98,593 applications under 94C and have already cleared 83,007 applications. This year we have received 150% of rainfall and 10 people have lost their lives. The district administration is trying to compensate the families by handing over relief funds and have requested the affected for their cooperation.”

Speaking on the achievements of the students who have excelled in SSLC and PUC examinations. Khader said that this year the district stood first in PUC in the state with 92% results and 85% in SSLC which is 3% more compared to last year. The National Highway work has not completed according to our expectations. We have taken measures to complete the work by holding several meetings with the NH officials. The national academy of Indian Coastal Guard will be started in Dakshina Kannada and all arrangements have been made. Measures will be taken to extend the runway at the Mangaluru International Airport. KIOCL will open a Power Plant at a cost of Rs 600 crores in the district in which 500 to 600 youth will be employed. We have implemented the Fasal Bhima Yojana and 8,750 beneficiaries have been registered. In Pilikula a State of the art 3D 8K Swami Vivekananda Planetarium built at a cost of Rs 35 crore was inaugurated on March 1, 2018. So far more than 65,000 people have visited the planetarium and appreciated it. The Urban Eco Park in Pilikula is under construction at a cost of Rs 17.60 crore. The new DC office in Padil is under construction at a cost of Rs 41 crore in 5.89 acres of land. Many more projects that have been implemented are nearing completion and the work of other projects is in progress”.

Later Minister Khader administered the oath to the gathering to protect nature and flagged off the “Hasiru Karnataka Andolan”. Minister Khader also planted a sapling on the occasion and distributed plants to the guests. Rolling shields were distributed to the winners of the March past.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA Vedavyas Kamath, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, IGP Western Range Arun Chakravarthy, SP Ravikanthe Gowda, Police Commissioner T R Suresh, ADC Kumar, ZP CEO Dr M R Ravi, Mayor Bhaskar K, MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer, ZP President Meenakshi Shanthigodu, Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, MLC Ivan, MLC Farooq and others were also present.
