Pediatric Kidney Transplant Performed Successfully at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital for the First Time in City

Mangaluru: In a significant medical breakthrough, a nine-year-old boy has received a new lease on life following a successful kidney transplant at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital in Deralakatte, Mangalore. This milestone marks the first pediatric kidney transplant performed in the city and is a testament to the hospital’s commitment to innovation and compassionate care. The kidney was graciously donated by the boy’s grandmother, embodying a profound narrative of love and familial connection.

The intricate procedure was executed by a distinguished team from the Yenepoya Institute of Nephro-Urology, showcasing an exemplary display of medical excellence. The surgical team comprised leading specialists, including Dr. Mujeeburahiman M (Head of Department), Dr. Altaf Khan, Dr. Nischith D’Souza, and Dr. Sharath D V from the urology department, with vascular surgeon Dr. Ganesh Kamath providing additional expertise. The nephrology team featured Dr. Santhosh Pa (HOD), Dr. Haisam, Dr. Aditya, and Dr. Preema. In recognition of the child’s specialized needs, pediatricians Dr. Sahana and Dr. Arun Varghese contributed crucial insights, while anesthesiology was expertly managed by Dr. Thippeswamy and Dr. Mithalee.

Chronic kidney disease had severely impacted the young boy’s daily life, necessitating regular medical interventions and creating significant challenges to his overall well-being. The decision to pursue a transplant was viewed as essential for restoring a sense of normalcy to his life. After comprehensive discussions that carefully weighed both medical and familial factors, the boy’s grandmother selflessly offered her kidney, an act that highlighted the deep familial bonds and facilitated a compatible match for transplantation.

The surgical team navigated the procedure with remarkable precision and dedication, ultimately resulting in a successful outcome. Following several hours of surgery, the young patient began his recovery phase. Post-operative evaluations showed promising signs, with medical professionals optimistic about his prognosis. The boy’s discharge occurred ten days post-surgery, while his grandmother, the donor, was released just four days after the operation, both in good health.

Family members and hospital staff celebrated this momentous achievement, extending heartfelt gratitude to the grandmother for her courage and generosity. Her decision to donate illuminated not only the medical possibilities but also the profound connections that bind families together in challenging times.

Yenepoya Medical College Hospital consistently demonstrates its dedication to high-quality healthcare, illustrated by the successful teamwork of its skilled professionals in navigating complex medical scenarios.
