Udupi: Police superintendent Laxman Nimbargi registered as many as 24 complaints during the phone-in programme on Friday, March 30.

Majority of the complaints were against cattle trafficking in Hebri, Matka and illegal liquor sale. The SP received three calls only on cattle trafficking in Hebri. Most of the complaints received were from Kundapur, Karkala and Brahmavar.

The callers complained that there was continues cattle trafficking in Hebri area and demanded to take strict against the culprits.

The SP replying to the callers said that the Police team had already nabbed some culprits in Hebri on Friday morning. He said that check posts are set up at the crucial junctions, especially in the junctions at Hebri, Someshwar and Mudradi where frequent complaints of cattle thefts are reported. The department will strictly monitor the illegal trafficking of the cattle in the district. Necessary legal measures are also taken in this direction.

Retorting to a query, the police head, urged the public not to seek any help from middlemen, who approach to get the passport and visa done. He added that the public should be aware that there is no need for a third person to get the passport or visa. The process is made simple and the public themselves can complete the required formalities, he added. He said that there are complaints that aspirants are made to believe that they are offered visa for jobs when actually it would be a tourist visa for a few days, he said.

There were two complaints of traffic violations at Murumarga in Karkala and an Auto rickshaw stand adding to their woes, the complainants alleged. The SP assured to look into the matter.

A caller said that shrill horns are still used by bike riders in Manipal leading to noise pollution and hearing problems. The caller requested immediate intervention in this regard. SP assured that effective action will be taken.

Another caller said that liquor has been illegally served in Hotels in the rural limits. SP said that strict action will be initiated against the Hotel management that serves liquor without proper approval and licence.

Elaborating over the cases filed and arrests carried out on the complaints received during the last phone in-programme conducted on March 2, the SP said that as many as 18 cases are filed against Matka activities and 22 arrests made. 79 persons are arrested in 12 gambling cases. Two persons arrested in one illegal liquor sale case that was reported. Four persons were arrested under 3 NDPS cases, he added. He further said that 287 cases were reported under COTPA, 1380 cases for riding without helmets, 31 drunk and drive cases, 40 cases for using mobile phones while riding/driving, 135 for using shrill horns, 100 cases for over speeding and 1438 cases under other categories.Phone-in: citizens complain about cattle trafficking, Nimabargi assures Action
