Phone-In Effect! SP Sanjeev Patil to Nail Money Lenders Charging High Interest on Loans

Udupi: Stringent action has been initiated against the people who lend money at exorbitant interest rates, a case was booked against Anil Agrahara and he was detained. “If people come across any cases related to charging of exorbitant interest on loans, they can file a complaint with the police and effective action will be initiated,” said Dr Sanjeev Patil Superintendent of Police-Udupi. He was speaking during the phone in programme organized at the SP Office, here on September 30.

A caller requested to take action against bus agents who were lending money on exorbitant interests. Another caller said that people were involved in gambling in a house in Karkala, in response, SP assured that a raid will be conducted and suitable action will be taken.

During last week Phone-in programme the SP had urged the public to avail loan from cooperative societies and government prescribed money lending associations rather than falling prey to people who lend money at exorbitant interest rates. The SP had also said that the department had initiated steps against people who lend money at very high interest rates. As per the SP’s Assurance the police have already booked one person under the exorbitant interest act

Another caller said that illegal liquor shops were functioning in Shrioor and Byndoor, SP said that despite taking necessary action the problem is persistent, a letter will be submitted to the Excise Deputy Commissioner for swift action. Another caller said that a person was annoying them over phone pressurising them to pay the money for the gift delivered – but when the receiver was reluctant to accept the gift, the person over the phone started to abuse him. In this regard, the SP promised to lodge a complaint in the police station and necessary action would be taken.

Another caller said that vehicles were parked in the no parking zone near Sanskrit College and Jamia Masjid surroundings which is leading to problems to the pedestrians, for which the SP assured of quick action. Personal cars were being utilized as rented cars, which has badly affected the tourist taxi owners business, complained another caller- In response SP said that he will depute police to take action against the people who are involved in this illegal trade. Other calls received pertained to Fake astrologers looting people by inviting them to lodges; the solution for this- he said, the practice will come to an end after the introduction of Anti-Superstition Bill. Many calls were received on gambling, illegal sand mining, traffic issues etc.
