Police Commissioner receives 24 Calls in an hour during Phone-in Programme

Mangaluru: The police commissioner Chandra Sekhar received 24 calls in an hour in the first of its kind direct phone-in programme, here on August 5.

The direct phone-in programme initiated by Chandra Sekhar to know the problems faced by the people of Mangaluru was a great success after receiving 24 calls in an hour.

On August 5, the first ever direct phone-in programme was launched by the police commissioner Chandra Sekhar. The commissioner received 24 calls from the public of which 10 were related to traffic jams in the city. In Kulshekar and Kudupu, city buses alight and board passengers stopping the bus on the road. One of the callers complained about the Kadri Kambla to Bharat Beedi office road being blocked with traffic all the time.

Another caller from Kinnigoli said that at the Kinnigoli bus stand, the parking facilities are not up to the mark and the Panchayat officials do not co-operate with the police.

At Suratkal MRPL Cargo gate the police have solved the problem of traffic jam which the caller appreciated. At the national Highway, the police have removed the barricades to avoid accidents. Many people have suggested holding awareness programmes on road safety for bus drivers. One of the callers requested to ban high decibel Vacuum horns in buses.

One caller from Yekkur suggested taking measures to avoid accidents at Yekkur since the school buses move in both directions on a one-way road. A senior citizen complained that the road is always blocked on the flyover at Kottara Chowki, there is no footpath from A J Hospital to Kottara Chowki, for the pedestrians to walk. Also there are no proper bus stops for people to wait for the bus.

Five people complained about drugs and illegal liquor sale, betting and gambling. In some hospitals, the patients family members create problems for the doctors. Callers also suggested developing the police quarters which is in a very bad shape. All the callers appreciated the initiative taken by the police commissioner for the direct phone-in programme.

The phone-in programme will continue every Friday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. DCP Crime and traffic Dr Sanjeev Patil and other police officers were also present.
