Bakrid on September 1: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai has said that the government has declared a holiday on Friday in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts since Bakrid will be celebrated on that day. While the official holiday was on September 2, the State Cabinet has agreed to shift it to September 1 for the twin districts. Saturday will be a normal working day, he added.

Mangaluru: The district administration has made elaborate arrangements and taken precautions for the smooth celebration of Bakrid on Friday, 1 September. Deputy Commissioner K.G. Jagadeesha was quoted in an official release as stating that necessary instructions are given to the concerned to prevent illegal slaughter of cows and camels as well as their illegal transportation.

At the same time, people should not take law into their hands upon coming across illegal slaughter/ transportation and instead inform the jurisdictional police. If public indulge in such activities, stringent action will be initiated against the guilty. Tahsildars, if necessary, may convene peace committee meetings for the smooth celebrations, had said DC. He asked the local administrations and the police to make suitable arrangements by placing barricades and similar other things near places of prayer and also make arrangements for traffic movement.

The Mangaluru City Police yesterday conducted a route march across the city to instill confidence among people to celebrate Bakrid without any fear as well as to ensure smooth immersion of Ganesh idols. The march started from the City Police headquarters/Nehru Maidan and moved through Nellikai Road, Car Street, Kudroli, Lalbagh, Bejai, Kadri Kambla, KPT, Nanthoor, Bikarnakatte, Maroli, Padil and Adyar before returning via Mahaveer Circle/ Pumpwell, Kankanady, Morgan’s Gate, Mangaladevi, and Pandeshwar before culminating at the starting point.

The convoy comprised one company of the Rapid Action Force (135 personnel), eight platoons of the Karnataka State Reserve Police (each 20 personnel), 50 City Armed Reserve personnel, one Vajra anti-riot vehicle, and regular city police, as per Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Hanumantharaya.

Earlier it was decided to celebrate Bakrid on Saturday 2 September, but due to the sighting of the moon, it has been preponed to Friday, 1 September according to Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi, the President of the Idgah mosque, that Eid Ul Azha will be performed at Idgah Mosque-Lighthouse Hill Road at 8 am on Friday, September 1 under the guidance of Dakshina Kannada district Qazi, Twaka Ahmed Musliyar. Kunhi had also stated that for the benefit of people offering prayers, necessary arrangements and facilities have been made, and has requested all Muslim brethren to be present at 8 am at the Idgah for the prayers.
