Police Dept Collects Rs 1.79 Lakh Fine during ‘Shrill Horn Drive’ – SP Laxman Nimbargi

Udupi: The Superintendent of Police Laxman B Nimbargi said that after continuous complaints from the public on traffic menace in Udupi district, the police in a special drive to control the traffic collected Rs 1,79,500 fine from the users of Shrill Horns in last 15 days.

SP Laxman Nimbargi speaking to media persons after the weekly Phone-in programme at the DPO on July 6, said that the district police acting against shrill horn users booked 53 cases against users of 53 bullet Enfield bikes, 92 cases against other two wheelers and 251 cases against four-wheelers fitted with shrill horns. The Police also imposed fine against 492 vehicle drivers for not wearing the uniform while driving. In the coming days, the police will also start a drive against vehicles with tint glass, those using illegal name boards on private vehicles and those who do not wear seat belts, he said.

A caller complained that many people were using tint glass in their vehicles. In addition, he complained that many private vehicles were using name boards illegally and also demanded to act against those who did not wear the seat belt.

Replying to the complainant, SP Nimbargi said, “The department is successfully initiating drives against various violations and would conduct a week-long drive against the illegal boards on vehicles other than that of authorized persons, tinted glasses and seat belts respectively”.

After the previous phone in-programme on June 15, as many as 36 Matka cases were registered and 38 persons arrested. Seven gambling cases were registered and 39 arrested. Three were arrested in three illegal liquor sale cases. One was arrested in an NDPT case. As many as 107 cases were registered under COTPA, 74 for drunken driving, 923 for shrill horns, 33 cases for using mobiles while riding/driving, 2245 for riding without helmets, 75 cases for over speed and 4056 cases for other crimes under the Motor Vehicles Act.

The SP received 16 calls, which included complaints against illegal liquor sale, unscientific parking and violations of traffic rules among others.

“The month of July will be observed as Traffic Management and Road Safety month, wherein the police personnel will visit schools and colleges to create awareness. Various types of competitions will be held for the students”, he said.
