Police Open Fire and Arrest 3 Dacoits in Bantwal
Mangaluru: The Bantwal police opened fire on three dacoits when they tried to manhandle the police and escape on May 31 night.
The arrested have been identified as Mohammed Muksin (23) from Suratkal, Mohammed Irshad (29) from Kuppepadav and Saddam from Maripalla.
On May 31, the Beltangady police received a call informing them about 4 to 5 people travelling in a red Maruti Suzuki Swift with deadly weapons towards Guruvayanakere. The Beltangady police relayed this information to the local police in Guruvayanakere. When the police spotted the suspected car, they asked them to stop. But rather than slowing down, the accused kept speeding towards Bantwal. The local police then informed the Bantwal police through wireless about the suspected vehicle. The Bantwal Town and rural police got into action and started to check all the vehicles at Manihalla Checkpost. But the dacoits did not stop their car at any of the check-posts.
Bantwal rural police station’s Police Constable Adarsh and Home Guard Bhaskar who were on duty at the Madhwa checkpoint spotted the red car and tried to stop it but were not successful. The PC and the Home Guard chased the car and at the same time, informed the Bantwal police. The police then parked their vehicle at the Manihalla junction to nab the dacoits. When they saw the dacoits, they tried to arrest them but as they saw the dacoits trying to assault the police with iron rod and machetes, Bantwal Town PSI Chandrashekar and Bantwal Rural SI Prasanna opened fire at the car.
In their bid to escape, the dacoits took a turn that resulted in the car getting stuck into a drain. Two occupants in the car were able to escape. The police rounded up the car and arrested three of them. When the police checked the car, they found two machetes, an iron rod, chilli powder, caps and rope.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that they were attempting dacoity and steal cattle. Mohammed has 14 cases against him in various police stations. Saddam has cases of murder and attempts to murder against him in the Bantwal Rural police station.
A case has been registered against the accused under sections 307, 353, 399 and 402 of the IPC.
The operation was carried out by Probationary IPS Akshay M, Bantwal Rural PSI Prasanna, Bantwal Town PSI Chandrashekar, PCs Nazir, Sampath, Adarsh and Bhaskar.
SP Dr Ravikanthe Gowda said, “Stern action will be taken against those who indulge in illegal activities.”
