Pramod Madhwaraj launches Udupi’s first Indira Canteen at Manipal

Udupi: The much-awaited Udupi’s first Indira Canteen was launched at the DC office road near the Syndicate Circle, Manipal here on Tuesday, February 27.

Pramod Madhwaraj Udupi district Minister in-charge inaugurated the canteen and also savoured the inaugural breakfast – Upma and Kesaribath.

The breakfast will be served from 7:30 am. to 10:00 am., lunch from 1:00 pm. to 3:30 pm. and dinner, 7:30 pm. to 9:30 pm.

Three more canteens will be operated across Udupi district, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner at subsidised rates in coming days.

City Municipal Council and the district administration will look after the canteen operations and food will be cooked at centralised kitchens. Under the Chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner, a committee has been formed to monitor the operations of the canteens.

Speaking to the media persons at the press meet Pramod Madhwaraj said that today we have opened the district’s first Indira Canteen in Manipal area. Another canteen will come up in Udupi near the old Taluk office within 15 days and the remaining two will be established at Karkala and Kundapur taluk headquarters. Poor people can now enjoy good food at affordable prices.

Last month the state government had released a total of Rs 33.045 crore for various developmental works in the Udupi Constituency. A sum of Rs 2 crore has been released for the Backward class Samudaya Bhavan work. Rs 1.17 crores released for the renovation and construction of the Churches including Mother of Sorrows Church Udupi (Rs 30 Lakhs), Mount Rosary Church Santhekatte (Rs 10 Lakhs), Christ Church Manipal (Rs 30 Lakhs), Milagres Cathedral Kallianpur (Rs 25 Lakhs), Sacred Heart Church Kolalgiri (Rs 22 Lakhs) and Our Lady of Fathima Church Perampalli (Rs 30 Lakhs), he said.

Under PWD department Rs 7 crores have been released for the Manipal Shimbra-Kolalgiri road and Brahmavar Heroor road development. Under Namma Grama Namma Raste Rs 7.2 crores have been released for road development works. Under State Road transport fund the Manipal private bus stand and Udupi service bus-stand will be constructed at a cost of Rs 4.475 crores. The long-pending Kalsanka dam and the side wall construction project will be taken up at a cost of Rs 2 crores and the Udyavar Padukere Jetti work construction at a cost of Rs 9.60 crores, he added.

Priyanka Mary Francis deputy commissioner Udupi, Meenakshi Madhava Bannanje president CMC Udupi, Sandhya Thilk Raj vice president Udupi, Congress leaders Ramesh Kanchan, Christen Almeida, Prashanth Poojary, Sunil Bangera, Yuvaraj, Celina Karkada and others were present.
