Pregnant Woman’s Death, Husband demands Jewellery to Accept Her Body from Mortuary

Mangaluru: 25-year-old Deepika, an Office Assistant had married Prakash Acharya of Karkala, a Welder and having other petty businesses, nine months ago. Seven and half months later she got pregnant, and faced lot of pain during pregnancy. As per the story narrated to Team Mangalorean by Deepika’s cousin, where he said, ” On 23 August pregnant Deepika had celebrated the ‘Baby Showers’ at he mother’s house in Moodbidri- and the function went on well, with her husband and many other relatives attending the ceremony”.

“Two days later, during the wee hours of 26 August, Deepika developed some severe pain, and she was immediately rushed to Alva’s Hospital, Moodabidri, where she was there for only two hours, after which she was shifted to Lady Goschen Hospital, Mangaluru- ans since there was no ICU facility at Lady Goschen Hospital she was moved to Govt Wenlock Hospital, where she was kept under intensive care. But on 29 August night at around 10.30 pm Deepika breathed her last due to High Blood Pressure and other health related complications, but through Cesarean doctors could save the child, which is a baby boy. Same night the husband and his brother came to the Hospital, and everything went on well between the boy’s and girl’s families, and after post mortem, the husband agreed to take his wife’s body on 30th morning” said the Cousin.

He further said, “But strange things happened on 30 August morning, where Prakash demanded all the jewellery and other assets of Deepika before accepting the body, for which the girl’s side objected, and informed Prakash this was not the right time to make all that decisions. After which Prakash along with his brother, who is a lawyer, threatened Deepika’s family that they would file an FIR, and left. Prakash’s phone was switched the whole day on 30 August, but at 3 pm finally he answered a call made by Deepika’s relative, where he promised to come down from Karkala to Wenlock Mortuary for further discussions. In the meantime, Deepika’s family members and relatives are all confused whether to file a criminal complaint or take Deepika’s death as natural death. If criminal case is filed it will take more than 24 hours, but if they agree for natural death, the body could be released by the doctors and the concerned authorities soon”

In the meantime, when Deepika was at her Mother’s house, she had left behind a diary in which she has mentioned that she was harassed, tortured by her husband’s family even while she was pregnant, and that she was made to wake up early as 4 or 5 am in the morning and do house work. The girl’s family now believes that Deepika might have developed lot of mental torture and face agony during the last few months, which might have led to her health problems.

Now at around 4. 30 pm Prakash arrived at the mortuary along with his family members, and both the boy’s and girl’s side have agreed on a compromise basis, and they have agreed the death of Deepika was a natural death. No criminal case will be filed, even though Deepika had written her few statements in her diary, because as per the police that evidence will not be sufficient to file a criminal case.

After the post-mortem, the Prakash’s family will be taking the body and the final rites will be performed later today in Karkala.
