Probe against BSY on cover of Gauri Lankesh’s latest issue
Bengaluru: From a cover story on the denotification case against former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa to an editorial that lauds the Supreme Court verdict striking down ‘triple talaq’, the latest edition of the late Gauri Lankesh’s eponymous tabloid serves a variety of news to ‘inspire’, ‘teach’ and ‘entertain’ its readers.
While the cover story traces the latest case against Yeddyurappa to a probe order issued by his successor Sadananda Gowda, Gauri’s editorial column ‘Kandahage’ (‘As seen’) focuses on two recent Supreme Court judgements.
Gauri questions the apex court’s ruling for an NIA probe into the allegations of ‘Love jihad’ in Kerala even as she welcomes the “progressive verdict” that struck down triple talaq. The subjects of many other columns are secularism, idea of India and the importance of tolerance.
Many of her regular readers knew that Gauri’s journalism was the direct output of her activism and her political leanings. Over the last few months, the tabloid had extensively dealt with the repeated attacks on minorities and secularism, most of which came because of her active role in forums like Koumu Sauharda Vedike.
Gauri ends her last column by quoting a tongue-in-cheek remark on the two Supreme Court verdicts each of which stand apart in their stance on women’s autonomy. The irony, which is visible in her posts on social media, suggests a dispassion that is not common among the activists.
