Proving Even Disabled Students Can Excel in Studies Bantwal Lass Bhagyashree, a Commerce student of Shri Venkatramana Swami (SVS) PU College, Bantwal Scores 467 Marks in II PUC Board Exams
Mangaluru: Here is a young girl, Bhagyasri who has shown others that even students with disabilities can excel in academics, and proving disability no deterrent, has scored BIG marks in II PUC Board Examination. Yes, Bhagyasri, a physically challenged student in Kuriyala of Bantwal taluk has achieved a rare feat of scoring 467 marks in commerce stream in II PUC examinations. She has been suffering from disability from her birth, having no strength at all below her waist level. As a result, she had to be carried daily to the school by her mother, but eventually, she later started traveling to school by auto-rickshaw.
Following close on its heels after Team Mangalorean published an article on a differently-abled lad from St Aloysius PU Evening College in Mangaluru, who scored 83.33% in II PUC Exams, (Ref: With Strong Will, Differently-abled St Aloysius Lad Vignesh T Rao Writes II PUC Exam & Scores 83.33%) here we have a young lass with her exemplary for other girls. Bringing about a change in callous attitudes may take some time, but till then reservation empowers the physically challenged not just in their profession but also in their lives. What it establishes is a precedent and more than one role model. In this case, we have Bhagyashree as a role model and inspiration to other students that in spite of her being physically challenged, she was very much determined and came out in flying colours.
Bhayashree completed her primary and high school studies in Loretto Church School in Bantwal, with good grades. Her mother had played a vital role in Bhayashree’s life, where she physically carried her to school daily, waiting for her till classes were over, and once again physically carry her back home. Her mother used to physically carry Bhagyashree to school, stay there till her classes were over, and then take her back home. It is learnt that in SSLC exams, she had scored 470 marks and now she has scored 467 marks in her II PUC exams. No doubt that Bhagyashree’s mother has been her backbone, supporting her throughout, at home and taking her to school and college.
At college, Bhagyashree used a stick to climb the stairs in the college and a wheelchair inside the classroom, or during recess. Daughter of Keshav Kulal and Mrs Rajeevi, a couple from Kooriyala village in the taluk, who run a petty shop near their house, to earn their living and support Bhagyashree’s education expenses. But sadly, even Keshav since birth has been physically challenged, but worked hard to support his family, while Rajeevi rolls beedis for extra income. Bhagyashree’s elder sister is pursuing her II year B Com studies.
Overwhelmed with her results, Bhagyashree has expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the college principal, teachers and staff, and especially her parents for their unstinted support and making her reach to the present status. After PUC, she wants to continue her B Com degree classes, and later find a government job so she can support her parents for all the hardship they had faced raising her up and providing education. No doubt that Bhagyashree has braved all odds and out shined herself in her academics despite her disability, has come a long way and has proved that even students with disabilities can excel in studies and bring name and fame to their institution and their family.
I feel sorry for the miserable condition of mother.
