The arrested has been identified as Thangaraju P alias Raja (64), a native of Kerala.

SP Bhushan said that between January to May 2016, Thangaraju had burgled 46 houses. “During the investigation, he revealed that he burgled houses only on Saturdays. Since some people lock their houses and get out of town for the weekend, Thangaraju took advantage of such situations and broke into the houses.”

The SP further said that in Puttur alone, 7 houses had been burgled, all during the night. “The police inspector of Puttur town station collected all the information about criminals with similar modus operandi, but they could not get any clues, suggesting a new player in town.”

On May 20, during a night beat in Shivanagar, the Puttur town police came across a person holding a plastic bag, who started to run after seeing them. On suspicion, the police chased the man and questioned him. During interrogation, he revealed that he had burgled 7 houses in Puttur. Police have recovered gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 7 lakh from his possession.

SP Bhushan also said that investigation is still on. “We will check his past records because he has confessed of 28 cases in Udupi, 1 case in Kushalnagar and 10 cases have been registered against him in Kerala. In 1988, a case had been registered against him in Chennai. We will investigate all the old cases and check who had given him surety to come out on bail, we will also cancel his bail.

The SP advised the public to take precautions before going out of town. “One should not lock the main gate for a long time. Before going out of town, do not keep the lights on inside the house. Inform the paper and milk distributors, and install burglar alarms at the front and back doors of your house. Also, inform the police station in your limits before you go out of town so that the police can keep an eye on your house during their beats,” he said.

The Puttur police team will be rewarded for the job well done in nabbing Thangaraju an interstate thief.
