Raid on Sand Mafia Reflects Pro-active Administration – ADGP Alok Mohan
Udupi: The raid on sand mining reflects the pro-active administration of the deputy commissioner and the officers said ADGP Alok Mohan, he was speaking after reviewing the police department at the SP Office, here on April 3.
The Deputy Commissioner is the head of the task force to regulate sand mining in the state and had raided two sand mining units; it reflects that deputy commissioner who is also the district magistrate is taking efficient steps in curbing the sand mafia in the district. There is no norm of informing anyone while conducting a raid, she is the district magistrate and she has the right to acquaint herself to the developments of the district.
The police department will intensify its efforts in curbing the sand mafia in the district. Stringent action will be initiated against the accused involved in creating a ruckus and threatening to kill the deputy commissioner. Such attacks will not be tolerated. People usually respect the deputy commissioner or any other officials but it was sad to see the people abusing the deputy commissioner and went further to attack the team which executed the raid. AGDP also said that the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police should coordinate while executing any operations.
In order to put a curb on criminal and illegal activities, the department has been upgrading patrolling system under all cities in the state. In a move to bring the police close to the people, police are reviving the village beat system. Under the village beat system, a constable will be in-charge of a village, while in the city, he will look after a ward. The constable will visit the area regularly and deal with matters, including passport verification, police verification and petition inquiry.He will act like a police sub-inspector of the area. The constable will be the nodal officer from the police station for those living in the village.
He also said that the rowdy sheet will be updated and the people will be booked under goonda act if found involved in major crimes. Eve teasing, consumption of drugs, narcotics will not be tolerated. The crime rate in Udupi is state and the department has played effective role curbing crime, he added.
Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis said that more stringent measures will be adapted to crack on sand mafia in the district. Henceforth the raids will be planned and executed with police support. While asked whether she was feeling that she should have approached police while executed the raid she said that as situation turn violent she felt that she needed to have informed but the team has got good leads in the raid, she added.
