Ramakrishna Mission holds 14 Shramadan of 40 Weeks’ Swacchata Abhiyan in Mahakalipadpu Area
Mangaluru: Ramakrishna Mission carried out the 14th Week Swacchata Abhiyan drive at Morgan’s gate Mahakali Padpu area on Sunday, the 4th February 2018. The Drive was flagged off jointly by K S Upadhyaya, Head of Raga Taranga and Seetharam A. K V Prasad, V N Bhat, Suresh Shetty and several others were present on the occasion.
Cleanliness Drive: About 250 volunteers were divided into 6 groups, they undertook cleanliness work in Mahakalipadpu area near the railway crossing. The students of St Aloysius College under the guidance of Professor Dr Ishwara Bhat cleaned the area from the Railway crossing to Morgan’s Gate main road including adjoining drains. Another group of students under the guidance of Prof. Sheshappa Amin cleaned the area from Mahakalipadpu to the Highway. Volunteers of Swacch Mangaluru cleared the surroundings of the railway track by cutting off weeds and overgrown grass and removed plastic bottles and 2 tippers of garbage. Dinesh Karkera and Vittaldas Prabhu led the group of volunteers and removed loads of sand from the road helping in the speedy movement of traffic. Employees of Antony Waste Management volunteered in the drive.
Erection of Road dividers: Daily more than 50 trains pass through Mahakali Padpu railway line and closure of the gate many times poses major problems to vehicles. This results in traffic jam and rush during the peak hours. After a pre-survey by the volunteers of Swacch Mangaluru consulting the locals, it was decided to erect road dividers by drilling about 20 iron rods on the road. Dilraj Alva, Sandeep Kodikal, Shubhoday Alva, Sujith Pratap, Akshith Attavar and other local volunteers actively participated in the drive. An awareness programme will be undertaken to enlighten the locals and regular commuters about the traffic rules in this region.
Cleanliness of bus shelter: The bus shelter near Jeppinamogaru highway was thoroughly cleaned. Mukesh Alva, Anand Adyar and several other volunteers removed illegal posters put up on the bus shelter walls and cleaned it. The bus shelter was given a facelift by re-painting.
Daily awareness: Since last 3 months’ volunteers of Swacch Mangaluru have been visiting hundreds of households and shops every day. In the month of January, about 20 teams of volunteers undertook the awareness campaigning by door to door visit distributing handbills. Umanath Kotekar coordinated the drive. MRPL is sponsoring this drive.
