Ramakrishna Mission’s 11 Shramadan of 40 Weeks’ Swacchata Abhiyan completes

Mangaluru: 11th cleanliness drive of the Ramakrishna Mission Swacchata Abhiyan was held on 14th January 2018 near PVS Circle in Kodialbail area. It was flagged off by Ramesh Rao, Secretary of Mangalore Seniors Association and B Ganapathi Bhat of Besant College to the accompaniment of prayers. Swami Jitakamanandaji, Secretary of Ramakrishna Mission, Br Shivakumar, Subraya Nayak and nearly 200 active volunteers participated in the cleanliness drive.

Cleanliness: NSS students of Besant College under the guidance of Andrew Rodrigues and Prof Amitha cleaned the roads and roadsides from PVS circle to Karangalpady with brooms. Another group under Chetana Katiyar cleaned the roadside drains. Members of Nivedita Balaga under Usha Dinakar and Vasanthi Nayak helped in loading the accumulated garbage into tippers. Young students of KPT cleaned the compound walls and surrounding areas off the weeds and overgrown grass.

Painting Bus Shelter: Bus Shelter in Kodialbail was neglected and public were hesitant to use it due to poor maintenance. Realizing this, volunteers of Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan cleaned the shelter of all posters and advertisements and cleaned the roof of the shelter with water and painted the shelter giving a facelift. Rajeshwari Kodikal, Sudhir Kokradi and members of Hindu Warriors put in their dedicated efforts for more than 2 hours.

Repairing footpath: Footpath in front of Social Welfare department office was dilapidated and there was a danger of pedestrians falling into the drain. Hence volunteers brought about 10 stone slabs and repaired the footpath and the adjoining drains were cleaned and covered with slabs. Dilraj Alva guided the volunteers with the help of Sandeep Kumar Taranath and friends of Kumar Gym.

Cleaning of Compound walls: The compound walls of Backward Girls hostel needed a thorough cleaning. Volunteers cleaned the walls by washing with water and cleaned the footpath by removing heaps of garbage. They also visited all the shops in the area and urged them to help in keeping the area clean by not throwing garbage here and there. Compound walls were repainted. In coming days, the walls will be painted with artwork creating awareness among the onlookers.

Shubhoday Alva, Suresh Shetty and Umanath Kotekar coordinated the drive. P N Bhat, Japanese citizen Yoko, Rakshith K P R, Rajendra D S and others actively participated in the drive. All the volunteers were served with tiffin in Sri Lakshmi Narayani temple. MRPL is sponsoring this drive.

If more and more NGO’s come forward and use their energy to keep the city clean instead of getting involved in anti-social activities, our city will be truly a SMART CITY.
