Ramakrishna Mission’s Swacchata Abhiyan carried out in Hampankatta Area

Mangaluru: Ramakrishna Mission Swacchata Abhiyan’s 29th Shramadan was organized in Hampankatta. K Vithaldas Prabhu & Dayananda Kankanady jointly flagged off the drive in front of the Milagres Church on 6th May at 7:30 am. Umakanth Suvarna, Dinesh Shetty, Kamalaksha Pai, Mohan Bhat & several others were present on the occasion.

Shramadan: After flagging off, the volunteers were divided into four groups. Souraj Mangalore & a group of volunteers cleaned the road dividers in Hampankatta circle and surrounding area. Dr Rakesh Krishna guided about 30 students of Nitte College of Physiotherapy who cleaned both sides of the Milagres Attavar Road off the dirt & sand. Chethana, Ravi K R & Satish and others removed the posters stuck to the bus stand walls near Milagres and cleaned the entire spot. Mohammad Shameem & other volunteers took up the cleanliness work in front of the Islamic Trust Complex. They also removed nearly half load of sand lying on the footpath and helped the pedestrians for easy movement. They also removed the illegally put up banners, boards & flex.

Civil repair work: In the past weeks a blackspot littered by the public was cleaned on the V T Road and was decorated with flower pots. Today it was given a facelift by civil repair work by using stones and plastering. Mukesh Alva coordinated the work.

Clearing 3 tipper loads of garbage: Several black spots in the city prone to littering by the public have been identified by the volunteers and they have been cleaned and beautified by the volunteers of the Abhiyan. Today another such spot in a corner on the Milagres Attavara Road beside I M A building was identified. Several loads of garbage and construction debris were lying in this spot for many years. So Dilraj Alva, Mohammad Nazir and other volunteers using JCB cleared nearly 3 tippers of garbage from the spot.

Cleaning the railings: Nearly 200 feet long railing with boards from Hampankatta to Light House Hill Road were thoroughly cleaned by the volunteers who also removed illegal advertisements and posters stuck on the railings. Anand Adyar, Shishir Amin, Vikhyath Ullal and other volunteers painted them giving them a new silvery look.

Awareness Campaign: Members of Nivedita Balaga and students on Nitte College of Physiotherapy along with Himmat Singh visited several households & shops in Milagres Church, Hampankatta & surrounding areas and distributed the awareness handbills and urged them to keep the area clean.

Ashok Subbaiah, Umar Farookh, Yogish Kayarthdaka and many other volunteers actively participated in the Abhiyan. All the volunteers were provided with tiffin after the Abhiyan. MRPL & Nitte Institutions are sponsoring the drive.
