Ramanath Rai Inaugurates Renovated National Flag Post at Nehru Maidan

Mangaluru: The renovated national flag post was inaugurated by the District Minister in-charge B Ramanath Rai at the Nehru Maidan here, on August 14.

Minister Ramanath Rai inaugurated the flag post by cutting the ribbon, later unveiling the plaque.

Speaking to mediapersons, Minister Rai said, “The flag post had not been maintained well and was in a bad condition. The Mangaluru City Corporation has come forward to renovate it.”  The renovated flag post was inaugurated a day before the Independence day. A statue of Nehru has also been erected on another side of the ground. “Jawaharlal Nehru had fought for the freedom of this country and as a mark of respect to the great soul, we erected his statue. Nehru fought for the independence of the country without expecting of becoming the prime minister. Many people are ashamed of calling this ground as Nehru Maidan. We want to make them understand the importance of Nehru Maidan,” said Rai.

Addressing the mediapersons, Mayor Kavitha Sanil said that due to the dilapidated state of the national flag post, it was inspected and it was decided that the post would be to renovated. Rs 4.88 lakh has been spent for the work. “The National Flag Post is holy. We will be carving the Ashoka pillar with the stone that is used for temples. The Ashoka Pillar will also be replaced before the Rajyotsava celebrations since it has developed cracks and is more than 48 years old,” Sanil added.

MLA J R Lobo, Chief Whip Ivan D’Souza, Sashidhar Hegde, Police Commissioner T R Suresh, ADC Kumar and others were also present.
