According to police, the accident happened due to reckless, rash and negligent driving after Gowda’s bike manoeuvred a hump on Uttarahalli main road near a turning towards Nirmalagiri Maternity Hospital.

Gowda was not wearing a helmet and was riding towards Kengeri when the tipper lorry heading towards Uttarahalli coming from Mysore Road collided head-on with his bike. His body was then shifted to Rajarajeshwari Hospital on Mysore Road for postmortem.

Kengeri traffic police registered a case and have seized the lorry. The driver of the lorry identified as Sudhakar was arrested and slapped with charges under IPC 279 and 304-A – rash and negligent driving on a public way causing accidental death.

As the news of the accident spread, a section of electronic media started broadcasting the accidental death was due to a pothole. A few others reported the accident was due to an unscientific hump, but senior police officials who visited the spot confirmed to DH saying the accident was due to rash and negligent driving.

“I inspected the spot. The accident was due to reckless driving, and we have arrested the driver and seized the lorry,” said Shivashankar ACP Traffic West.

“The two-way Uttarahalli main road is closed for heavy vehicles during the peak hours between 7 am and 11 am and the tipper lorry has got into the main road from Mysore road just before Kengeri traffic police closed the road for heavy vehicles. The lorry was over-speeding when the accident happened,” said another senior police officer.
