Red Flags Go Up on Malpe Beach to Warn against Venturing into Sea till August
Udupi: As depression has formed in the Arabian sea, in order to warn tourists from entering the sea, the Malpe Beach authority has placed red flags on the beach on Friday, June 14.
The Malpe beach authority has placed 40 red flags all over the beach area. It has also set up 7 feet high nets in an attempt to alert tourists of the dangers of swimming in the sea.
The beach authority has also issued an advisory cautioning visitors not to venture into the sea during the monsoon season (between June 1 and August 30) as the sea and wind conditions are not favorable for swimming in the sea or for carrying out any water-based recreational activities.
Sudesh Shetty, a member of the Malpe Beach authority said, “As per the instructions from the district administration, we have shut down the beach in Malpe for swimming and all water sports during the monsoon months from June to August as the sea during this season tends to be extremely rough and choppy. The nets and red flags will be removed at the end of August or during the first week of September depending upon the sea conditions. Until we replace the red flags with yellow flags as an indication that it is safe to enter the sea, we request tourists to follow the rules.”
