Revenue Minister Deshpande Distributes Compensation Cheques to Rain Hit Families in Udupi

Udupi: Revenue Minister R V Deshpande reported that the government has released Rs 3 crores to Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts for emergency relief during a natural disaster. He was speaking after distributing the rain disaster relief amount at Udayavar on June 14.

“The government has directed the district administration to disburse Rs 5 crore as compensation to aggrieved families. As per the union government norms, for complete or partial damage, the compensation is less. We are planning to increase this. There is no shortage of funds to provide relief,” he said.
The minister said that he would hold discussions with the finance department officials to simplify the procedure to provide relief to victims of natural disasters and come out with a circular detailing the simplified mode of payment.

On payment of compensation to the dependents of those killed in natural calamities, Deshpande said that the rules provided for a payment of Rs 4 lakh. There has been an amendment to the rule to provide Rs 1 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Calamity Relief Fund.

Deshpande also said that deputy commissioners should have a minimum of Rs 5 crore with them to provide relief to victims of natural disasters. “If the amount with them is less than Rs 5 crore, steps will be taken to release more funds,” he added.

The minister distributed cheques totaling to Rs 10,75,993 as compensation to 17 families for rain damages.

Urban development minister U T Khader, Kaup MLA Lalaji R Mendon, Deputy commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis, ZP CEO Shivananda Kapasi and others were present.
