Revival of the Konkani Play ‘Maldisanv’ at St. Aloysius Deemed to be University
Mangaluru: On October 6, 2024, a momentous cultural event took place at St. Aloysius Deemed to be University in Mangaluru, marking the revival of the esteemed Konkani play “Maldisanv,” penned by the eminent author Francis Fernandes-Cascia. This performance was particularly significant as it was the first time in nearly 25 years that the play was staged in Mangalore, highlighting the enduring relevance of Konkani theatre in the region.
The event was attended by several distinguished guests, including the playwright himself, Francis Fernandes-Cascia, along with Rev. Fr. Melwin Pinto SJ, Pro-Chancellor of the university; Dr. Alwyn D’Sa, Registrar of St. Aloysius Autonomous College; Dr. Ronald Nazareth, Registrar of St. Aloysius Deemed to be University; and Rev. Dr. Melvyn D’Cunha SJ, Pro-Vice-Chancellor. Their presence underscored the importance of the occasion and the collective commitment to the preservation of Konkani culture.
Directed by Christopher D’Souza, the revival of “Maldisanv” was presented in a modernized format, diverging from traditional interpretations. The students of the Konkani Sangha infused the performance with renewed energy and creativity, delivering a compelling portrayal of the characters that resonated with the audience. The innovative presentation style further enhanced the emotional depth of the narrative, captivating all in attendance.
A special felicitation ceremony honored Francis Fernandes-Cascia for his significant contributions to Konkani literature. He expressed his delight at the performance and commended the university for fostering student engagement in the dramatic arts. He emphasized the importance of such initiatives in nurturing motivation and enriching the Konkani community, applauding the institution’s commitment to cultural preservation.
The successful execution of this revival was the result of meticulous planning and coordination by the Konkani Sangha, led by Ms. Flora Castellino, with Roshan Crasta serving as the compere for the event.
The revival of “Maldisanv” not only celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the Konkani language but also provided an invaluable platform for young talent to showcase their skills. The realistic and revitalized performance left a profound impact on the audience, reaffirming the significance of Konkani theatre in contemporary society.
