Ride4pride! Athlete cum Cyclist Shaik on a 8000km Cycle Expedition

Ride4pride! Athlete and Cyclist Shaikh SS Shameem on a 8,000-km Kanyakumari-Kashmir (Leh)-‘Kanyakumari Atulya Bharat-Bharat Bhraman’ Solo Cycling Expedition from May 23 to June 29. Starting on May 23 in Kanyakumari, Shameem would reach Bengaluru on May 25 and June 26 (return); Hyderabad on May 28 and June 23; Agra on June 3 and June 18; Delhi on June 4 and June 7; and Leh on June 11 and 12- and back in Kanyakumari on June 29.

Mangaluru: He has an inspiration, and it’s all very simple ! “At the age of 50/60/70, when sitting on an arm chair at home-balcony and looking back into memory lane; it would be really painful if I have to regret that when I had the time and capacity, I din’t even try.” I truly believe in, “Do whatever you can do, before you can’t do only”, with only one main target running in my brain “To see where I stand in the Crowd”. Possibly, I may not be a champion to win a given race by coming First of the lot. I agree, I might not be having that lightening Speed. So, whats wrong in making the finish-line so far/big, that only very few will ever think/dare about it; and I will have genuine chance to be the deserving champion (with proud and respect)”

“With all these simple, yet heavy philosophy, I want to “Try Whatever I Can Try”, to“Do something, so that if not anybody else, but I should RESPECT myself”. And, my belief in all these made me initiate all these. On a mission to live above-said stuff, I started planning, and now, am all set to go for yet another Solo Cycling Expedition, “Bharat Bhraman : Ride-4-Pride”. Never-the-less, I want to give some genuine reasons to my parents, family to be proud of me (which they of-course are, without any reasons yet) “, these is what this cyclist had to say as he is all gearing up for the 8,000-km Kanyakumari-Kashmir (Leh)- ‘Kanyakumari Atulya Bharat-Bharat Bhraman’ Solo Cycling Expedition.

A Runner, a Cyclist, he indeed is an endurance Athlete. More importantly, he says that he is just a common man, with an uncommon (desperate) desire to live happy. This 27-year-old Assistant professor at Manipal University-Manipal has been stretching his horizons every since he took up endurance sporting three years ago, and now he is aiming at entering the Limca Book of Records through his cycling expedition. We all used to cycle in our school days, and love to cycle in early mornings of weekends/holidays. Cycling 10-20 Kms is very good fitness activity suggested by doctors; but if one zero is added to make it 100 Kms, becomes a Task. For sure, nobody in weirdest of their dreams would dare to mistake of adding one more zero to make it 1000 Kms. Yaah, right. On cycle!!

Introducing, Shaikh SS Shameem, a native of Bhadrak district in Odisha, but now settled in Manipal since eight years, is all set to attempt for a Solo Cycling journey from Kanyakumari to Leh in Kashmir, and return back, and this totals up-to 8,000 Kms, and he aims to complete it in just 38 days, starting from 23-May-2016. This literally sounds crazy, but an attempt for entry in Limca Book of Records has to be crazy. Shameem introduces himself in a very meaningful way: Muslim by Birth; Indian by Heart; Human by Nature; Professor by Profession; Family person by Emotion; Trier and Achiever by Determination.

Interestingly, he is an engineering Asst. Professor at Manipal University- but he has always stolen time from his very busy schedule (regular classes, academic work, and ongoing Phd.) to devote on his passion in endurance sports. After completing his masters in computer applications at Manipal, Shameem joined Manipal Institute of Technology as an Assistant Professor and has been active as an endurance athlete with the support from his institution as well. And through this journey, he is trying to spread the message of Unity and Humanity. Also, whatever funds he might be raising through this journey, he will be trying to help some of the financially challenged talented athletes.

So far, SSS Shameem has taken part in eleven half-marathons, three full-marathons, eight 200-km brevets, four 300-km brevets and one 600-km brevet. Brevets De Randonneur Mondiaux (BRMs) are rides (bicycle) of fixed distances that are to be completed within specified time limits, having successfully passed through predetermined time controls. Recently, he completed a 1,500-km solo cycling expedition from Bengaluru to Koraput in Odisha, for which he received a grand acknowledgement in social-media, and Newspaper portal, with almost all the national_daily news-papers covered his success story. It is not just that he concentrates on individual performance; but Shameem encourages others too. In the recently concluded 200-km Netravathi brevet organized by Mangalore Cycling Club, he rode along with four other riders from Manipal as a group from the beginning to the end encouraging and supporting them, though he could have completed the brevet much earlier.

Shameem says, “I do what I do, because of the inexpressible feeling of crossing the finish-line (neither best, nor “just” acceptable; but with respectable timing) and sense of joy of doing something different. Trying myself, and Testing myself; again and again; and proving myself every time. Also, I am preparing myself for attempting and setting some of the National-International Records, if possible. Its always a ‘dream’ that makes a common man do uncommon stuff. Hailing from small town of Bhadrak in Odisha, I made my way to Manipal/Bengaluru a decade back. As years kept passing, I developed some special likeness towards endurance sports, that is making me do all these. Otherwise, I am just another common man, born in this world to die one day, without making any great difference. Forget about making great difference; I just want to justify my existence in this world. And that is what was expected by HIM, when HE sent us here “.

Speaking of his forthcoming double K2K ride which is the first of its kind and till date no one has made an attempt to create a record, Shaikh Shameem said, ” As of now, communication is in progress with Local Govt. authorities in the respective districts of States of Karnataka, UP and Tamilnadu, for possible support w.r.t. emergency help, and local publicity-acknowledgement. Also, SP of Udupi-Annamalai (IPS); DC of Udupi, Dr. Vishal R. (IAS) have shown great interest and involvement in this project. Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal and Manipal University have also shown interest in this project. St. Xavier’s Catholic College of Engineering at Nagarcoil (Kanyakumari) will be a part in flag-off for this event. Kanyakumari SP, DC, and District Sports Authority might join for the flag off, if they have no other commitments that day. The Logical Indian, Voice of Ram, and Mohabbat-ke-Dange Family are helping for Online campaigning. Mangalore Bicycling Club (Mbc) and T10-Sports will be sponsoring me with jerseys for this journey.

Apart from the zeal to create a national record, Shameem is keen on promoting cycling among the youth both as a fitness as well as commuting medium. Throughout his ride, he intends to mingle with local cycling clubs, youth associations and students to spread the message. He says, “I feel, by bringing me to this beautiful world, God has given me the chance to earn happiness, respect and deserve a satisfying exit. So that, at the time of my departure from this world, I should have no remorse of missing out something. Life is full of joy and pleasant notes, which is hidden in small things; and its up-to us to find it and benefit from it. It varies from person to person, what makes them happy and satisfied. But all that matters is that, the path and target should be right, and not hurting/troubling anybody/anything. On similar notes, I too have some thoughts and ideologies, which makes me do whatever I do in my day-to-day life”.

Shameem is a regular endurance athlete, still far away from a podium finish, but with a vast experience of eleven Half-Marathons, three Full-Marathons, eight 200-Km Cycling, and now he is taking it to extreme level with 8,000 Km for Double K2K (Kanyakumari -to- Kashmir). Interestingly, (if successfully completed) this journey is going to be a First-of-its-Kind (unique) attempt in India (South-North-South), never attempted before. During this journey, he (alone) will be passing through 14 States and UTs, 57 Districts, and 50 (major) cities; many NHs, check-posts, and even some of the (possible sensitive) stretches in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, J&K etc. Moreover, it will be the heat of summer, and being absolutely all alone, in a race against time and distance will make it a herculean task.

Then, Why is he doing this all? As he (with his usual funny attitude) says; “It’s all very simple. At the age of 50/60/70, when sitting on an arm chair at home-balcony and looking back into memory lane; it would be really painful if I have to regret that when I had the time and capacity, I din’t even try.” At the age of 27, it sounds bit too much!! He continues, “I truly believe in, Do whatever you can do, before you can’t do only, with only one main target running in my brain, To see where I stand in the Crowd”. Talking about ranking/winning, he franking admits and replies, “Possibly, I may not be a champion to win a given race by coming First of the lot (at least now). I agree, I might not be having that lightning Speed. So, what’s wrong in making the finish-line so far/big, that only very few will ever think/dare about it; and I will have genuine chance to be the deserving champion (with proud and respect)”. That has point.

With all these simple, yet heavy philosophy, he continues, “I want to Try Whatever I Can Try, to Do something, so that if not anybody else, but I should RESPECT myself”. He might not be knowing, but (in his own small circle) many already respect and admire him. He completes his answer to this “why” with the final statement, “Never-the-less, I want to give some genuine reasons to my parents, family to be proud of me, which they of-course are, without any reasons yet”. Proud-parents Sk. Habibun Bibi and Sk. Anwar Hossain are always his role-model and source of inspiration, for which he apologies with God-almighty for respecting them more than HIM.

Also, he is promoting the message of “Live and Let Live”. After lot of analysis, he preferred to proceed with this cause of “Being Human; the Human that God- Almighty created”, which he himself tries to follow to possible limit. He believes “It’s okay, if you can’t make someone laugh; but don’t make one cry. Don’t be the REASON of PAIN to anybody.” Apart from this, he also want to help those financial challenged athletes whose talent go waste due to lack of resources. On personal note, he is already in process of helping a few such talents; but that support (from his small-in-size pocket) can hardly make a difference. But, it can obviously make a beginning; and that’s what he is trying/aiming with this Double K2K fund-raising.

While he is on his great cycling expedition, Shameem is expecting some help/support from your end as well, to make his event successful- where he said, ” I want to make people be aware of it; and cause i.e. UNITY and HUMANITY. I want to be a source of inspiration, example in front of people to take up challenges and try to achieve difficult-most goals. I focus (already working) towards Youth Involvement into sports, specially running and cycling. I wish Company, business house, Govt. and People to support towards sports talents. I expect company/club/associations to come forward to help me for this journey. Team Mangalorean wishes Shaikh SS Shameem all success and safe journey in his cycling expedition.
