London, March 4 (IANS) Carlos Arthur Nuzman, president of the Rio 2016 Olympics organising committee, has acknowledged that the Zika virus is a “worldwide” problem but emphasised that the situation is “under control.”
Nuzman on Thursday pointed out that Brazil has already taken action. He explained that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have said it is a priority to deal with this virus, and added that they reiterated that everything is “under control”, reports Efe.
Nuzman made his statements at a hotel here during a briefing on the Games, to be held this summer. He stated that WHO director general Margaret Chan discussed this issue with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff recently.
Brazil is one of the countries most affected by the Zika virus, which has spread in 30 states in Latin America and the Caribbean, in addition to other countries worldwide.
