Rivers Overflow, Low Lying Areas Submerge in Udupi District
Udupi: 6 people including an 85-year-old woman and an eight-month-old baby, were rescued by the rescue team from flooded areas in Balekudru, Peramapalli following heavy rainfall.
The rain fury over Udupi taluk has left the low lying areas submerged and rivers overflowing at the danger level. The unprecedented incessant rain that lashed the taluk has increased the threat of flooding in many areas, and some islands in the region remained completely immersed in water.
River Swarna was overflowing the danger level mark in the morning. Uppoor, Aroor, Belmar, Balkudru, Ramanakudru, Heroor, Heranje, Jansalebettu and Havanje regions have been facing severe floods.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a ‘red alert’ for the Pune district for Saturday and Sunday. The Udupi district authorities on August 8 issued an advisory alerting people to be wary of the situation, especially to those residing in the low-lying areas of the district.
