Road Renaming! ‘Kulur Ferry Road’ Out – ‘Gokarnanath Temple Road’ In

Mangaluru: Even though the controversial renaming of Light House Hill Road to “St Aloysius College Road” – “Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty Road” – “Idgah Road”- is still hanging in there, but at the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Council Meeting held on 28 November, a unanimous decision was taken to rename “Kulur Ferry Road” to “Gokarnanath Temple Road” between the stretch of New Chitra Talkies (Car Street) Junction and Lady Hill Junction.

The proposal to rename the above said by corporator M Nagesh, MCC Council unanimously approved the proposal, where Mayor Kavitha Sanil said Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara Temple over the years has attracted thousands of tourists and has also played an important role in highlighting the culture of the City, through Mangaluru Dasara and other activities. In the meantime, few members of the opposition (BJP) hinting at Congress leaders namely MLA J R Lobo, MLA Moideen Bawa and MLC Ivan D’Souza, asked whether the ruling Congress had taken into confidence these 3 legislators while preparing the agenda.

Also raising his voice, BJP corporator Tilakraj, in an obvious reference to the role played by MLA J R Lobo and MLC Ivan Lobo in the renaming of Light House Hill road controversy, suggested that the Mayor discuss the current road renaming (Kulur Ferry Rd) issue with these two legislators, lest it becomes yet another controversy like the last one. At present in the Google map, the stretch between New Chitra Talkies Junction up to Kottara passing through Lady Hill junction is locally referred as Kulur Ferry Road.

In order to prevent any confusion, it has been decided to rename the road only between New Chitra Talkies (Car Street ) junction and Lady Hill Junction after the famous Temple- and MCC has invited any public objection in this regard before it is officially published.
