Road Safety Week ‘Your safety secures your family, be cautious on Road’ Concludes

Mangaluru: The concluding ceremony of the 28th Road safety week with the theme “Your safety secures your family, be cautious on Road”, was held at the Police community hall here on January 18.

The programme began with an invocation. DCP Crime and Traffic Dr Sanjeev Patil welcomed the gathering. RTO R N Vernekar delivered the keynote address.

Addressing the gathering Police commissioner Chandra Sekhar said, “We have observed the Road Safety week to bring awareness to the general public. The students have more knowledge on road safety, our police personnel have educated the students by visiting their schools and colleges.”

Police commissioner Chandra Sekhar also asked some questions to the students on road safety and the students enthusiastically answered all the questions. He also said that the don’t care attitude of the driver or rider will lead to accidents. While driving or riding we should think of others, sometimes the drivers stop the buses wherever they want to pick passengers instead of stopping at the bus stop. The person who stops the bus at places other than the bus stop and the driver are directly responsible since such attitude leads to accidents and traffic woes. We need to change our “WE, I, ME” attitude and strictly follow the traffic rules. Being in a hurry while driving may lead to tragedy. The road safety week should not be limited for a week but should continue spreading awareness among the general public. Enforcement of traffic rules will continue, most of all we need to bring awareness in order to avoid accidents.”

SP Bhushan Borase said, “Adults have decided not to change their driving habits, but we need to bring awareness to the students. I have two requests with the children, when their parents drive the car and forget to use the seat belt, you should request your parents to wear it for your sake. And the second request is, when your brothers ride the bike ask them to wear the helmet or else request them not to ride the bike.”

Mayor Harinath in his presidential address said, “Mangaluru is a fast developing city and the roads have been widened and concreted. When there is road widening people park their vehicles on the road and disrupt the free flow of traffic. The police should take strict action against those who park their vehicles on no parking zone and lock the wheels. Police work round the clock to maintain law and order in the district even while they are being criticized for simple reasons they work with patience.”

Mayor Harinath advised people not to drink and drive. While driving follow the traffic rules to avoid accidents and inconvenience to others. Every life is precious, we should not lose our patience while riding two-wheelers or driving. Youths should always wear the helmet while riding. Let all of us join hands with the traffic police and make Mangaluru an accident free city.

Mayor Harinath and Police commissioner Chandra Sekhar distributed prizes to the winners in the drawing competitions. ACP Traffic Tilak Chandra delivered the vote of thanks. Traffic warden Joe Gonsalves, Aziz Parthipady and A K Jayaram were also present.
