Roshni Nilaya Classmates bring back Reminiscences of 1987 during Reunion

Mangaluru: At Reunion of classmates, it’s always a history, where past memories are shared and cherished. Yes, reunions-they can be excitedly anticipated or painfully dreaded. Either way, the first hour or so can be awkward as classmates shuffle in from all over. Reunions should include time for catching up and renewing old relationships. Getting past that awkward hour will get a little easier, if there is lots of fun and easy reunion ice breaker games. And for that matter, the reunion or call it a get-together of a bunch of classmates who shared the same classroom or may be shared the same benches came together to have a social night out.

Yes, Class Reunions or Alumnae Reunions are a chance to brag about what they may or may not of accomplished. In some there is the fear of what has not been accomplished. And there are some, that are just interested on how far people have come. There is also a chance to look at the humorous side of things. Spending time looking at the fashion and the hair in old photos, and is also a chance to look back at some of the stupid things that were done while being classmates. Nearly 30 plus students of Batch 1987 who had studied at Roshni Nilaya of Social Work got together after 30 years for a Reunion Bash that was held on Saturday at the College Auditorium, to cherish the moments and fun that they had when they were students of this prestigious institution.

It was a nostalgic journey down the memory lane for these classmates who came together for the Reunion Bash. The memoirs of yester years were once again rejuvenated as they all shared their memories of those olden, youthful, cheerful days full of happiness and joy. The chief guest for the occasion was Dr Olinda Pereira- the Founder Principal of Roshni Nilaya, who was beaming with pride to see some of her old-students. Also on the dais along with Dr Pereira were other professors who had taught this 1987 batch namely- Prof. Hilda Rayappan; Prof Pramila Shekhar; Sr Flavia; Prof. Rita Noronha; Prof. Audrey Pinto; Prof. Krishnamurthy; Prof. Sr Philomena D’souza; Prof. BM Madhav Rao; Prof. Selvaraj; Prof. Sr Jacintha D’souza; and Prof. Sr Philomena Serrao.

The welcome address was delivered by Nithin, followed by introduction of the batch and brief history of their life and activities during their 1987 college days, done by Bopanna. The chief guest Dr Olinda Pereira who was referred as Mother Teresa of Mangaluru by the Compere, addressing the audience said, “This is not a happy moment, but a emotional moment, where it’s nice to see faces of some old students who have exited out of this college. You students are our success story, and your achievement has brought name and success to Roshni Nilaya. Each of you is a God’s gift to this prestigious institution. It’s nice to note that you have all come from near and far for one big moment in your life to recollect and cherish the golden days of 1987. Each one of you is very personal to me, and Roshni Nilaya is proud of you and your accomplishments. Hope you’ll carry the Roshni Nilaya motto wherever you are and wherever you go. May God bless you all”.

The former students of batch 1987 felicitated Dr Olinda and also all the professors seated on the dais. Students came forward and introduced their professors and spoke a few words of wisdom on them- and each professor gave a befitting reply through their words of wisdom, and also overwhelmed to be amidst their former students, which was indeed a blessing and memorable day for them. Also during the occasion a book written by one of the 1987 batch student Urva Kiran named “Self Help Group-Different Faces” was released by Dr Olinda Pereira- and after releasing the book she said, “This book points out clearly the way of building up self help organizations and groups. Referring to SHG’s we must appreciate the courage of women who have ventured into this area of community service”

“The very fact that women come forward to form groups which will utilize available resources, proves the fact that of public awareness and community mindedness. It is my sincere hope that this book by our old student with its valuable store of knowledge and wealth of information will be useful to many and will be beginning of much more dissemination of expertise in days to come”, added Dr Pereira. The vote of thanks was proposed by Nataraj, while the programme was professionally compered by Ms Tara Pinto.
