Rs 1 Crore Seized, Mandatory CCTV in Buildings as Per Law briefed during Police Commissioner Phone-In Programme
Mangaluru : Prior to taking phone calls from citizens complaining about civic/traffic related issues during the Police Commissioner Phone-In programme on Friday, 17 May 2019, Police commissioner Sandeep Patil briefed the media people about the seizure of Rs 1 crore unaccounted money from a male person this morning. Addressing the media Patil said, “This morning while a male person was walking on Car Street, Mangaluru with suitcase, North Traffic Police Station Inspector Govindaraj on suspicion on this man, requested the man to open the bag- and to their surprise they found Rs 1 Crore in the bag, with no documents to support it. The man was identified as Manjunath, aged 56, from Malleshwaram, Bengaluru- and that he had come by night bus from Bengaluru to Mangaluru last night”.
” More details on where the money was to be delivered, and who sent the money will be reported later, after thorough investigation. It is learnt that a gang is operating in Mangaluru, where they deal with unaccounted money, stolen cash and other valuable items, and we are trying to crack them down soon, since we have a few clues. Anyone knowing about any suspicious activities or money laundering going on should inform the police, and will be rewarded, with their identity kept secret. I commend Govindaraj and his team for their quick thinking in apprehending this man with such large amount of money” added Sandeep Patil.
Speaking on the mandatory of CCTV’s sandeep Patil said, “As per government regulations, it is mandatory to install CCTV cameras at public places, and the state government has passed the Karnataka Public Safety (Measures) Enforcement Bill. Accordingly, it is mandatory for private establishments such as schools, colleges, apartments, commercial buildings and various public locations to install CCTV cameras. It is compulsory to ensure high quality resolution of the cameras. The Police Department will be the authority to implement. The government has already passed the Karnataka State Public Safety Bill in the Assembly and the same will be officially notified as an Act, through the state gazette. If CCTV units are not installed within the time limit, a fine of Rs 5000 will be imposed, and even later, the trade or business licence issued to the owner or occupier of the building may be cancelled or suspended”
“As a measure to control crime, the State government has made installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) units mandatory in all public buildings, commercial establishments, and places where public congregate in large numbers. There should be at least two CCTV’s installed in a building-one facing the front entarnce, and one inside. Copies of the order have been circulated. Buildings were more than 100 people assemble are mandatory to install CCTV’s. The CCTV units should be installed at vantage points such as entry and exit points, corridors and reception areas. Police have full rights to visit the buildings, and check for CCTV’s, and fine the owner if CCTV’s are not found. According to the rules, every person intending to construct or reconstruct a public building should make necessary provision in the building plan for the installation of CCTV units while applying to the urban local body concerned seeking permission for execution of work. The government order has been communicated to field level city police officers, instructing them to advise the owners or occupiers of public buildings to install CCTV units ” added Patil.
As per complaints received from citizens during the phone-in programme, were : A male called in said that a gang sits near Kulur bridge, smoke ganja and involve in illegal activities, and tease women, including his wife; Street vendors menace is increasing in the city, and its hard to find a parking spot, all taken by these vendors- and they are rude when communicated with them; minors are seen riding two-wheelers without helmet, riding rash in Ullal; Private water tankers are charging extra for supply of water during this water crisis; Newly done footpath near Valencia has been occupied by street vendors, making pedestrians walk on the road.
CCTV’s should be installed on George Martis Road near Mallikatta where youngsters are riding rash, and lots of illegal activities going on, complained a petty shop owner; Pourakarmikas are seen hanging on to the side of the Antony Waste Handling Pvt Ltd garbage trucks, instead of sitting inside the truck- this is a safety hazard; Mobile canteens operating near Mescom Bejai while frying splash the oil on passerby, and the area is also ridden with oil and other waste- no hygiene also; Lady complained that a Head Constable from Bunder police station was rude and acted in inappropriate manner; a environmentalist said that police during meetings or other occasions should not use plastic bottles ( Ha…and every one starred at the Bisleri bottles on the meeting table during the phone-in programme?); there is lots of illegal activities and smoking of ganja going on near Sooterpet vicinity; -were among some other civic issues that poured in during today’s programme.
And in reply, police commissioner Patil assured that proper action will be taken, and that he will depute the concerned police officials of that particular areas to sleuth into the issues, and rectify them. During today’s PI Programme, a bunch of callers complimented the police force for their quick action in solving the Shreemathi Shetty murder case, by nabbing the murderers and going further with thorough investigation. During the programme, respiratory masks were handed over to a bunch of traffic police to use them during traffic control time- nearly 1500 such masks have been received for distribution.
