Rs 10 Crore Allocated to Upgrade Wenlock to Regional Hospital – MLA Lobo

Mangaluru: “The District Wenlock Hospital has a history of 170 years and is a model district hospital in the state. The Hospital has 1000 beds and people from 8 to 10 districts as well as from the neighbouring state of Kerala come here for treatment. From past 60 years, KMC Hospital has been working with Wenlock Hospital under the PPP model. More than 3 lakh people are being treated as outpatients and over 30,000 people treated as In-patients every year. The Blood bank at the Wenlock Hospital has a capacity of 6200 units of blood, more than 1000 autopsies are also being carried out. The government has sanctioned Rs 10 crore to upgrade the Wenlock Hospital to a Regional Hospital”, said the MLA of Mangaluru South Constituency J R Lobo in a press meet held at the administrative block Wenlock Hospital here on July 25.

Addressing the mediapersons Lobo said, “The Wenlock Hospital is providing quality service to the patients. The hospital being very old lacks proper basic facilities. We had requested the government to upgrade the hospital and the government has considered our request and allocated funds in the budget. I would like to thank Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Health Minister Ramesh and Shalini Goel for considering our request. Already Rs 5 crore has been sanctioned and the construction work for a new 200 bedded hospital is in progress. Wenlock hospital has a heritage status which should be preserved.”

Lobo further said, “In the year 2016-17 Rs 5 crore has been sanctioned and in the year 2017-18 Rs 10 crore has been allocated. These funds will be utilised to construct a 200 bedded multi specialty hospital. In the RAPCC unit, the children’s hospital will be upgraded similar to Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital Bengaluru. Already Rs 3 crore has been sanctioned to upgrade the Children’s hospital. Out of RS 3 crores, Rs 1 crore will be utilised for buying equipment and Rs 2 crore will be utilised for consumables, building maintenance and medicines.”

Lobo also said, “The Ayush department has applied for constructing an Ayush Hospital in the Wenlock premises. We have considered their request and identified the land which is vacant in front of the Logistics department.”

DMO Dr Rajeshwari, RMO Julian Saladanha, corporator Vinayraj and others were also present.

Health related activities in an ever-growing City of Mangalore deserves the first priority in all our budgets, plans and programs. People’s health enables the progress and prosperity of the City. Whoever decided Wenlock Hoapital to be in the center of the City 170 years ago was a fine idea, but as the City has grown ten fold, the famous Wenlock Hospital, we think, should have been somewhere near Urwa or Bolar or even Bondel.
