Rs 4 Cr BMW Car Win News from Con Artists-Youth Loses Rs 1.4 lakh
Mangaluru: Even in spite of police repeatedly warning citizens not to fall for a prey for scamsters who promise expensive things and swindle money, still, all their efforts are in vain because people still continue to fall trap in a bid to win big. In yet another case following close on its heels where on Nov 5, online scamsters swindled Rs 32 Lakh from a 38-year-old Bajpe Woman saying that she had won big money from a cell-phone maker- now a local 20-year-old student lost Rs 1.4 lakhs to fake callers who said that he had won a brand new Rs 4 cr BMW Car.
According to the complaint filed with the cyber crime police, the student received the first call on October 31. The caller – the first accused – who introduced himself as Frank Douglas, told the youth that he had won the vehicle and he had to pay Rs 24,500. The youth then deposited Rs 15,000 to the account of Lalremruot – the second accused. The callers, who were convinced that the student could be conned, kept swindling money from him on the pretext of demanding customs fee and cost of transfer among other clearing expenses/reasons.
Overwhelmed by the big news so that he could cruise around the city in this luxury car, the student even got a loan by mortgaging jewellery. It is learnt that the youth transferred Rs 15,000 to the account of the second accused on November 1; Rs 24,000 to the account of third accused Sandeep Kumar on November 3; Rs 30,000 to the account of November 4; Rs 20,000 on November 6 to the account of fourth accused Neha Kumari; and Rs 10,000 to fifth accused Surender Sinsh on November 7. All in all, the youth ended up transferring Rs 1,43,500 to the callers. Finally, when he stopped getting calls from these strangers did he realize that he was being scammed.
In a similar modus operandi, in June 2017 a resident from Madyar near Kotekar had lost about Rs 21 lakhs to pranksters. So beware! Con Artists are masters of trust. You can learn a lot about trust from the people who violate it for a living. ‘A hood planning a bank holdup might case the treasury for rudimentary facts, but in the end he depends on his gun. A con artist’s only weapon is his brain, as to how he/she can dupe someone. So next time when you get a call that you have won big, think twice before you accept that offer- you could be conned?
