Rs 6.5 Crore Mangala Badminton and Kabbadi Stadium to Come up in Urwa

Mangaluru: “For the total development of Mangaluru city we are giving priority to sports along with education. When Sadananda Shetty and the members of the Badminton and Kabbadi association approached me to have a Badminton and Kabbadi stadium, I approached Minister Pramod Madhwaraj and Additional Chief Secretary to the Government, Youth Empowerment and Sports Department Dr Rajaneesh Goel, IAS. They took special interest and sanctioned Rs 6.5 crore for the stadium”, said MLA of Mangaluru South Constituency J R Lobo in a press meet held at Hotel Ocean Pearl here on January 20.

Addressing the mediapersons MLA Lobo said, “The stadium will be constructed near Urwa Marigudi in 1.13 acres of land. The total cost of the project will be Rs 6.5 crore. This grand stadium housing the Badminton and Kabbadi courts as per international standards has been the version of the state government in association with the ministry of youth affairs. The government has provided 1 acre of land at Marigudi, Urva Market. It is envisaged to have an international Indoor stadium for Badminton and Kabbadi. Outdoor court for Kabbadi practice is also provided which will be fully equipped with state of the art synthetic courts, international standard lightings, complete multi gym with changing rooms and locker facilities.”

MLA Lobo further said, “We are also constructing the stadium at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore at Yekkur. Already the government has released Rs 1 crore to start the construction work. Badminton and Kabbadi being sports with mass appeal have so far not been fully encouraged due to lack of infrastructure and coaching facilities. If these sports are provided with the state of the art courts, well equipped with international standard lighting, synthetic courts, training programmes, fully equipped gym, changing rooms, and locker facilities our players have good future. If a Badminton and Kabbadi stadium will be constructed at Marigudi we can hold national and international-level sports meets periodically in this stadium”.

Addressing the mediapersons chairman of Sri Devi Educational Institutions Sadananda Shetty said, “When we met MLA J R Lobo and discussed of having a Badminton and Kabbadi Stadium in Mangaluru, Lobo immediately agreed and sent the proposal to the concerned authorities for approval. We should tell the people that because of MLA J R Lobo’s efforts today we have been able to get the approval for the Badminton and Kabbadi Stadium at Urwa, Marigudi. There were a lot of hurdles but MLA Lobo with his efforts solved all of them amicably and has made it possible. There are a number of people who are ready to take credit but through the media, we are conveying the message that MLA J R Lobo is the only person who has made this stadium possible in Mangaluru.”

Chairman of Alva and Associates Supreeth Alva said, “The project will be completed in 2 years. The lower basement floor will accommodate parking for 35 cars. The administrative block will contain conference halls, guests rooms, dormitory and a cafeteria. The Spectator gallery for Badminton will have the capacity of 4000 people and 1500 people for the Kabbadi event which can be held simultaneously. We would like to thank MLA Lobo for his support in getting this project for Mangaluru.”
