RTO and Traffic Police Act on Shrill Horns, 60 Buses Penalized

Mangaluru: Acting on complaints of the height of the steps of buses and also shrill horns, the RTO in association with Traffic police inspected several buses at State Bank here on July 6.

Speaking to mangalorean.com the Regional Transport Officer In-charge G S Hegde said, “We have received many complaints during the police department’s phone-in programme and the highest complaints were regarding the shrill horns and the height of the steps of the buses. Today we have held a joint operation along with the traffic police and checked the height of the steps of several buses. The Senior citizens, women, and children find it difficult to board the bus. Two seats should be reserved for senior citizens in the bus, but these rules are not being followed. Today we have put stickers on the buses to reserve seats for senior citizens.”

RTO Hegde further said, “The height of the steps should be 52 cms from the ground level which is also not followed. We have registered cases against buses that do not maintain the height of the steps. It is mandatory to use handheld bus ticketing machines in all the buses. Sometimes bus conductors do not issue tickets on the bus. If ticketing machines are not used in buses, action will be taken against them. On July 5 we seized 8 contract carriage buses for violating the permit. Contract carriage buses are not allowed to enter service bus stand as per the permit condition. Some of the buses having permit only up to Mallikatta also enter the service bus stand. We will inspect such buses and cases will be filed against them. We have filed a case against a Volvo Bus from Bhatkal to Mangaluru using shrill horns”.

RTO Hegde also said, “Some autos which have permits to operate only in rural areas also operate in the city. In Mangaluru there are only 2500 stands for autos. But we have 6500 autos running on the streets. Action will be taken against autos with Rural permits running in the city.”

Traffic Inspector Mohan Kottari speaking to mangalorean.com said, “Today we have inspected 60 buses installed with shrill horns and collected a penalty of Rs 6000. Our operation will continue in the coming days”.

President of Bus Owners Association Aziz Parthipady, was also present during the inspection.
