RUB Flooded Again! If Pumpwell Flyover is 8th, Padil Rail Under Bridge is 9th Wonder of the World?

Mangaluru: If India could successfully launch its second lunar mission ‘Chandrayaan-2’, the first to land on the Moon’s south pole, and if successful, India will become the fourth country to make a soft landing on the Moon’s surface, but our Indian Engineers, Architects and Contractors have not been successful yet in rectifying the FLOODING situation that’s happening year after year, during monsoon. Faulty design and planning of the Road under Bridge (RuB) by the Southern Railways, and now Mangaluru City Corporation has to bear the brunt in rectifying the “Flooded Situation”? But even as of today, nothing much has been done to fix this “watery” situation, since years. The RuB looks like a swimming pool, and a couple of years ago there was a protest by an organization by fishing in this flooded water. With no other option to allow the flow of the stranded water, MCC has been using pump-sets to pump water to clear the area, when it rains.

Why would anyone construct such a Bridge at such lower level, when they knew that it would get flooded during heavy rains. Not a Smart idea by our Smart Engineers, where now the citizens have to bear the brunt of this miserable mess. On 15 July Team Mangalorean had published an article ”  https://www.mangalorean.com/once-completed-pumpwellflyover-could-be-the-eighth-wonder-of-the-world/“, now it looks like the Padil RUB could be the NINTH WONDER OF THE WORLD, with unscientific planning. Sheer waste of taxpayers money down the drain on such faulty projects, putting citizens in hardship.

The Rail Under Bridge (RUB) near PadilBajal Road, near to Mangalore Junction Railway Station, which has caused lots of inconveniences to motorists and pedestrians since it was put to use, has flooded again due to last two days of continuous downpour- and with rains in the forecast it is going to be much more worse. While four-wheeler vehicles wade through the knee-high flooded water, but two-wheeler riders are using the pedestrian walkway, putting commuters life in danger. Even after experiencing problems that this project had created since a couple of years, the concerned authorities have still not rectified the problems, creating more problems than helping people. And with the recent heavy rains, the RUB has been flooded making it hard for light vehicles, especially two-wheeler to navigate through it. With no proper drainage planned while constructing this RUB, rain water gets stranded up to knee level and sometimes even above.

With the incessant rains lately, and due to the poor planning of this under-bridge with no proper drainage the rainwater has been collecting till knee-high. While motorists, especially four wheelers are managing to wade through the water, the pedestrians are using alternative and longer routes to avoid this mess in order to reach their workplaces and other appointments in the city. The main reason for the present pathetic situation is because of the lack of coordination between the City administration and Palakkad division of Southern Railways.

It is learnt, though the corporation was aware of the existence of a perennial stream immediately after the under-bridge, little was done to allow free flow of water without disturbing the vehicular movement through the bridge. With heavy rains lately, water is getting accumulated inside the concrete box forcing vehicle users to wade through the pool. A corporation should speed up the construction of the drain to facilitate a smooth flow of the stream- but at present, it seems like nothing has been done so far, other than pumping of water.

Although RuB road stretch has not been closed for the timing, with vehicles wading through the water, while two-wheeler riders and pedestrians use the walkway, the RuB that was constructed with few crores has resulted in taxpayers money going down the, “Drain”? Be CAUTIOUS, if you dare to wade through this flooded RUB? Have a Safe Journey…and in the meantime enjoy the video……
