Rusting in Peace in Govt. Junk Vehicles Graveyard?
Mangaluru: Few months ago, when DC AB Ibrahim was in-charge he had ordered the removal of all old/junk vehicles sitting in most of the government department parking lot/premises- but my visit to some of these government office complexes yesterday show that DCs orders have not been taken very seriously. This report exposes the oft-ignored filth that is omnipresent in almost every government office in India, including Karnataka, and for that matter, Mangaluru too. Garbage and junk vehicles welcome you at the first sight when you enter some of the government offices in town, including Mangaluru City Corporation office premises.
Just have a glimpse behind the some of the government offices in the city-like the PWD building, Panchayat Office, and also MCC building-due to heavy rains, stinking stagnant water has collected giving scope for mosquito breeding and it has been like that for weeks-and our officials are talking about preventing malaria and dengue, when they themselves can’t keep their premises clean. The surrounding of PWD department looks like a “Bhooth Bunglow” (Ghost House). PWD which is suppose to look after the beautification and upgrading of government structures/buildings and roads is giving a bad example by their office surroundings.Yes, cleanliness, like charity, begins at home-Not for Public Works Department (PWD) though. I only hope this article one of these days would open the eyes of our Sarkari Babus at various government offices to maintain cleanliness, instead of just filling their pockets?
Apart from filth scattered all over the area, the surrounding around some of these government buildings look like a museums, with “antique?” broken down vehicles, and furniture lying all over. There are cars, jeeps, vans-all broken and lying all over the place. Why can’t the department get rid of them for scrap, and earn some income, instead of letting them rot on the compound, and expose a dirty picture. Why would the officials care, after all it was a tax payers money that bought these vehicles.
Even MCC is least bothered about cleanliness when they are seriously promoting Swachh Bharath- just look at the dilapidated garbage vehicles rusting near Mannagudda Petrol- when MCC switched to new garbage disposable system, all the old garbage hauling vehicles were abandoned and left to rust. You can even find a few vehicles rusting in the lot behind the MCC building, and also at the Police Commissionerate premises, near Nehru Maidan. At Wenlock Hospital, there is a neglected ambulance which is catching rust- all these are health hazard issues. But does any of our administration authorities care about it- I don’t think so?
In conclusion, I really don’t know whether my message through this article will reach the concerned authorities at the PWD, MCC, Wenlock and if it did, I earnestly request them to rectify the “dirty” situation around and in the PWD premises. Surprise me Dear Saar Saabs ! Next time I visit your premises I should be astonished to see the difference- CLEAN, is the word! Or “Swachh Bharath” in other words? If you make up your mind, I think you can make a difference.

Alfie – you have done a very nice job exposing the criminal waste of taxpayer’s money! Looks like they ordered these vehicles without looking into why they really need them, how would they use them, how much it would cost to maintain, how long would they keep them, and they would help a city that is really in need of garbage collection trucks, road repairs, and fixing the water supply system!It appears as though the DC’s order was a joke!Government’s attitude has only worsened in the last 50 years.
Alfie, thank you for a very relevant topic! This blatant waste of resources has been happening over so many decades. Not only vehicles, even state-of-the-art machinery that was given to the MCC by international organizations also has rusted into the ground. Instead of letting these vehicles rot, Government can at least get them refurbished and provide them to the rural panchayaths. Hope some sense will prevail….
