S.O.S! Susheg Charitable Trust Needs Help to Build New ‘Susheg Jivith Neuro Care’

Mangaluru: Susheg Charitable Trust is formed to enrich life of all living beings – humans, animals and plants. Susheg means contentment – a satisfied, peaceful life in harmony with one’s environment. Susheg is a Konkani word derived from the Portuguese ‘sossegado’ which means a contented form of life. To realize its goal, Susheg Trust has set the following objectives: To Build and operate assisted living facilities for persons with physical or neurological challenges; Educate by conducting training programmes, seminars, awareness campaigns and courses related to wellness of human beings; Establish diagnostic and treatment centres for animals and provide temporary shelter for their recovery and protection; Engage in agricultural studies, natural farming and environmental protection; Provide medical care by partnering with other organizations and hospitals; and Offer Counselling and rehabilitation services

The energetic team members of this Trust namely J Gerald Pinto-Trustee; Dr Lavina M Noronha-Trustee; Rev Fr John Fernandes-Trustee; Mrs. Loretta Pinto – Founding Member; Mr. Joseph D’Silva-Accounts Officer {Hon}; Dr Prabha Adhikari; Col. John N Serrao; Dr Kanakalatha Abbagani; Mr. Allen C Pereira; and Dr. Santhosh Prabhu- all of them Advisory Committee members are toiling hard with dedication and commitment to raise this Trust to greater heights, to serve those persons with challenges, especially those diagnosed with neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s Dementia.

As of today, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s Dementia. However, it is possible to slow down the progression of the disease and take care of some of the symptoms with medications and other cognitive behavioural interventions, thereby attempting to enhance the quality of life in those diagnosed with it.

What is Alzheimer’s Dementia?

Dementia is a long-term, incurable disease characterized by a constellation of symptoms which worsen over time due to its progressive nature. It can be caused by a variety of factors and Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most common causes of dementia which accounts for about 60-80% of all cases. Named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer, who was the first to recognize and write about it, AD affects brain functions, including memory, behaviour and reasoning.

The progressive nature of Alzheimer’s Dementia and the multiple symptoms that eventually disrupt the overall functioning of the person makes him/her completely dependent on others for carrying out the activities of daily living. In most cases, the burden of caring for a loved one falls on family caregivers who experience “burn out” due to care giving challenges. Residential Care under professional supervision is the need of the hour in order to ensure the dignity and worth of every person who is battling this disease.

In recent years, there has been an alarming increase in the number of people diagnosed with debilitating and progressive neurological illnesses like Dementia, especially Alzheimer’s Dementia. Unfortunately, the services needed to cater to the needs of those who are affected are almost nonexistent which puts the burden of caring for a loved one on the families. As the disease progresses and multiple symptoms manifest, providing care at home becomes an ongoing challenge. Created as a unit of Susheg Trust, Susheg Jivith Neuro Care’ is the Trust’s humble endeavour to establish and operate an assisted living facility to fill the gap that exists.

Indeed a nice write-up, which brought tears to my eyes, for the fact that my dad spent his last days as an Alzheimer’s patient- and in his memory I would like to donate funds to the upcoming project undertaken by Susheg Trust- but it will be done when I come down with my wife and kids, so that we donate the money to the needed facility at the new project. We will keep in touch. Thanks Susheg team for taking care of Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients.
